10 Cities That Look Amazing Online But Brits Regret Visiting
When we see places online, they often look amazing with all the right filters and angles. But sometimes, our high hopes turn into disappointments when we actually visit. With tons of tourists, less than shiny realities, and certain places being too pricey or hard to get around, some popular destinations might not always live up to the expectations we set while scrolling through our screens.
Here are 10 cities that look incredible on Instagram but might just let you down a bit when you visit them for real:
1. Venice, Italy
Venice is undoubtedly picturesque with its winding canals and historic architecture. However, it can also feel like you’re stuck in a crowd almost anywhere you go. The streets are often swamped with tourists, making it tough to enjoy the beauty at your own pace. On top of that, dining and lodging here can hit your wallet pretty hard, making you feel the pinch.
Our opinion: It is still worth visiting even with the crows. Just be ready for it and plan to go somewhere quieter after to relax.
2. Los Angeles, USA
Los Angeles might seem all glam and star-studded online, but navigating this sprawling city is a whole other story. Without a car, getting around is a challenge, as the public transport isn’t as developed as in other big cities. Plus, the glamorous spots are fewer than expected, with many areas showing a more regular, everyday city life.
Opinion: LA is built differently but still very worth visiting. I loved checking out Venice Beach, Rodeo Drive and all the touristy places.
3. Dubai, UAE
Dubai’s skyscrapers and luxury might attract you from afar, but the city’s strict rules and blistering heat aren’t for everyone. While it boasts modernity and innovation, the cultural and climate shock can make the visit less enjoyable for some.
4. Bangkok, Thailand
The buzz of Bangkok is electrifying online, but the reality can be a tad overwhelming. The city’s chaotic streets, intense heat, and the sheer volume of people can prove to be a bit much for those not accustomed to such bustling environments.
5. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam’s quaint streets and canals are a delight, yes, but it often feels overrun with tourists, taking away from its authenticity. The city sometimes feels like it’s showcasing itself rather than being itself, which can be a bit disappointing if you’re looking for genuine Dutch culture.
Opinion: I don’t personally agree with this. Amsterdam is so fun and charming. it is worth seeing 100%.
6. New York City, USA
New York City is known for its fast pace and towering skyscrapers. However, the city can drain your energy and your bank account faster than you might expect. The constant rush and high costs can make the visit less enchanting than what you’d hoped for.
Opinion: Yes, NYC is quite expensive but it’s absolutely worth seeing at least once in your life. There is so much to do there. One of my favorite memories is taking the ferry to Staten Island!
7. Rome, Italy
Rome’s rich history and stunning ruins are a must-see, but the experience can often be marred by the crowds. With tourists often outnumbering locals, it can be hard to fully appreciate the ancient city’s charm when you’re elbowing through a crowd.
Opinion: I’ve been to Rome several times. Shoulder season is optimal. I highly recommend going either around April or October when it’s not as busy but the weather is still nice.
8. Paris, France
Paris is romanticized as the city of love, but falling into a tourist trap can quickly change that perspective. Overpriced cafes and throngs of tourists in popular spots can make the visit feel less authentic and more commercial.
9. Las Vegas, USA
Las Vegas is all about the buzz and glitz, but it can also be a sensory overload. The endless noise, lights, and the high cost of entertainment and accommodation might make you wish for a quieter, simpler visit.
Opinion: I love Las Vegas. It’s such a different experience and you are close to so many beautiful sites like Grand Canyon and Red Rock Canyon. Well worth seeing and experiencing.
10. Santorini, Greece
Santorini’s blue domes and sunset views are a dream. Yet, the reality of navigating through crowds to catch a glimpse of these famed spots can be frustrating. The island is beautiful, no doubt, but maybe not as peaceful as your favorite influencer’s photo suggested.
Opinion: Santorini is super busy during peak summer but it’s absolutely worth visiting. Make sure to get out of Oia and visit other places like Vlychada beach, Kamari, and Pyrgos. Santorini is beautiful and less crowded in September too which is my favorite time to go!
Sometimes, a place might not be as perfect as it looks online, but remember, it’s all about experiencing and finding beauty in even the unexpected parts of traveling.
