1. Sunset Catamaran Cruise, for the most romantic date ever

In our opinion, this is the ultimate romantic date whether you are visiting Santa Barbara of living in Santa Barbara with your partner. Going on this sunset catamaran cruise is the best mix of romanticism, having fun, discovering the coast and having amazing views of Santa Barbara. It’s definitely a once in a lifetime thing to do near LA. Unless you are easily seasick (in which case, this date idea is probably not for you), you really can’t go wrong with bringing your partner on this cruise, which remains one of our favorite date ideas starting with a C.

On this catamaran cruise, you’ll be sailing in the evening along the Santa Barbara coast. As this is an evening cruise, you get to sail at sunset time which adds a level of romanticism to the experience. During the cruise, be prepared to see dolphins, sea lions, otters and birds. In addition, the views from the catamaran are incredible as you are able to see the Santa Ynez Mountain range and the Channel Islands. This activity will be the perfect opportunity to take some romantic couple photos. Don’t forget to check out our two word captions for couples when sharing on instagram!

From experience, the price of this cruise is also very reasonable. In some places, it would be at least twice the price per person. For that reason and all of the above, we highly recommend bringing your partner on this cruise while in Santa Barbara.

Want to blow your partner’s mind? Check out this cruise here

2. Sunset Kayak Tour, one of the most romantic things to do in Santa Barbara

This 2 hour sunset kayak tour is a gorgeous Santa Barbara date idea for couples who like active dates without it being an extreme experience. For two hours, you will be kayaking along the coast of Santa Barbara with gorgeous sunset views. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to see otters, sea lions and dolphins in the distance. We love this date idea as you can choose to be in the same kayak or in separate kayaks. If you choose to be in the same one, you’ll have to work as a team. If you choose separate kayaks, you have a bit more freedom to play with each other and can choose to race or paddle together to watch the sunset next to each other.

4. Whale Watching Catamaran Cruise with Bar

One of the things to do in Santa Barbara honeymoon style is going on this whale watching catamaran cruise. To be fair, this is much more than just a whale watching tour. First, it includes a drink which is always a great idea, especially when on a date or when celebrating a special occasion with your partner. Second, the tour gives you the opportunity to see much more than just whales. During the cruise, you’ll be able to admire the Santa Barbara coast along with a range of marine animals such as dolphins, grey whales, and sea lions.

The good news is that this cruise runs all year round with different sights. In the winter, you can spot orcas, blue whales, humpback whales, and pilot whales. In February, over 28,000 pacific gray whales migrate north so you have the opportunity to see lots of whales and their babies (calves) as well!

Romantic view from the Santa Barbara Clocktower

One of the main landmarks that doubles as a perfect Santa Barbara date idea is the Santa Barbara County Courthouse and its famous Clocktower. Though Santa Barbara was built in a Victorian architecture style in the early 1900s, it is now mainly famous for its Spanish colonial style buildings and the courthouse is one of them.

The courthouse and clocktower actually reminded us of the archeological building at Trinity College in Dublin which is built in the same Spanish colonial stye. You can recognise the style by the edges on top of the building, and the style of the arches.

The courthouse and clocktowers make for stunning date ideas in Santa Barbara for several reasons. First, the tour, including the Mural Room, is free which is great if you are on a budget. Second, the building is actually incredible. It is surrounded by clean gardens and tall palm trees, making it all feel like a dreamy date spot. Third, the bell tower houses a viewing platform that delivers 360-degree views of Santa Barbara. Talk about blowing your date’s mind with incredible views!

The most romantic time to visit the courthouse and clocktower is just before sunset. This allows you to get up to the bell tower and watch the sunset from up there with views on all Santa Barbara. We don’t want to intrude, but this is the perfect spot for a first kiss, just sayin’!

There are free guided tours on weekdays between 10:30am and 2pm. Outside these hours, you can visit at your own pace for free as well. The clocktower is accessible on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 11:30am and 1pm along with Saturdays from 1 to 2pm.

Another main landmarks in Santa Barbara that doubles as a romantic place is the Old Mission. With a stunning building, cute arches, lush gardens and even a rose garden, this place is in itself a romantic spot. But we wouldn’t be giving you the full story if we didn’t add that it stands on a hill near the Riviera foothills and therefore delivers unobstructed views of the Channel Islands, Pacific Ocean and of course, Santa Barbara.

This is a great romantic place and one of the best first date ideas in Santa Barbara. Entrance is free and views, especially at sunset or golden hour, are just unforgettable!

The wharf was built in 1872 and is now used for pedestrians and water taxis. On the wharf you can now find a shellfish market and restaurants. This is a great place to grab some chowder with your partner and have a relaxing date with beautiful views on the water.

The wharf is also great for grabbing ice cream and going for a walk. Of course, one of the main attractions at the wharf is observing marine life with whales and dolphins who like to swim in this area. In the summer, you can also observe pelicans on the wharf.
