10 Mind Boggling Differences Between Europe and America

Moving from Europe to America can be a big shift with many unexpected changes. Some of these can shock Europeans. From everyday habits to broader cultural norms, Europeans often find themselves surprised by the American way of life.

Here, I’ve detailed some of the most unexpected differences that Europeans encounter when they move across the Atlantic.

1. The Milk Is simply Different

This might sound like a funny one but every foreigner I know who’s moved to the USA has pointed this out! In America, milk is typically sold in plastic containers and must be refrigerated, lasting only a few days once opened.

This is quite different from many places in Europe, like France, where milk is often sold in ultra-heat-treated (UHT) cartons that can be stored unrefrigerated for weeks if unopened. This difference in milk storage is one of the first small surprises for many Europeans.

2. The Air Conditioning Is Everywhere

Air conditioning is almost ubiquitous in American homes, offices, and public spaces, a stark contrast to many European countries where it is much less common.

Europeans moving to America often find the widespread use of air conditioning surprising, especially in areas with mild climates where it might seem unnecessary.

3. Endless Straight Roads

America is known for its vast landscapes, which include long, straight roads that stretch for miles without a bend. This is quite different from the often winding and narrow roads found in many parts of Europe. The straightness of American roads can be both mesmerizing and monotonous for newcomers.

4. Using Cardinal Points for Directions

Americans often use cardinal points (north, south, east, west) to give directions. This method can be confusing for Europeans, who are more accustomed to using landmarks and right or left directions. Learning to navigate using cardinal points is a new skill that Europeans have to adopt in America.

5. Sweeter Foods

Many Europeans find American food to be significantly sweeter than what they’re used to. From bread to sauces, the higher sugar content in everyday foods can be quite a shock to the taste buds of those new to the country.

6. Healthcare Costs

One of the most talked-about differences is the cost of healthcare in America. Unlike many European countries with universal healthcare systems, the U.S. system requires insurance, and medical expenses can be high. This aspect of American life can be particularly shocking and hard to adjust to for Europeans.

7. Ubiquitous American Flags

In America, the national flag is displayed everywhereโ€”from homes to public buildings. This frequent display of patriotism is less common in Europe, making it a noticeable feature of American life for many Europeans.

8. Influence of Religion

Religion plays a significant role in the everyday lives of many Americans. This deep religious influence can be surprising for Europeans from countries where religion is more private or less pervasive in public and political life.

9. Political Polarization

Everything in America can often seem polarized into Democrat versus conservative views, even topics that might seem non-political. This degree of political polarization can be quite different from the political culture in many European countries and is often unexpected by European newcomers.

10. Recognition of Success

Americans are often very good at openly acknowledging and celebrating each other’s successes. This cultural norm of recognition and positive reinforcement can be quite refreshing and different from the more reserved European approach.
