When thinking about where to live or visit in the U.S., it’s good to consider air quality, especially if you have health concerns like asthma. Some cities have high levels of pollution that can affect your health even during a short stay.

We’re highlighting the 12 most polluted cities according to a report by IQAir, a group that monitors air quality globally. They measure pollution through PM2.5 levels—tiny particles harmful to our lungs. Accompanying these PM2.5 levels, the Air Quality Index (AQI) helps us understand daily air quality.

Here’s a list of cities with high pollution that might be better to avoid if you’re sensitive to air quality.

1. Coraopolis, Pennsylvania

Coraopolis takes the top spot for pollution with a PM2.5 level significantly above healthy limits. Even though its AQI is moderate, meaning the air quality might seem okay, the high PM2.5 can still pose risks, especially for those with breathing issues. If you’re sensitive to air quality, it might be wise to limit your time outdoors in Coraopolis.

2. Park Forest, Illinois

Park Forest follows closely with PM2.5 levels that exceed recommended limits. The AQI here usually shows ‘good,’ which might sound reassuring, but the presence of such high PM2.5 levels means you should be cautious, particularly during activities like jogging or extended periods outside.

3. Cave Junction, Oregon

Despite its AQI being rated as ‘good,’ Cave Junction has a noticeable amount of PM2.5 in the air. For those with respiratory concerns or sensitive lungs, it’s best to avoid strenuous outdoor activities that can increase your exposure to these harmful particles.

4. Happy Camp, California

In Happy Camp, the air quality is generally good, but the PM2.5 concentration is three times over the safe limit. This means people who find it easy to wheeze might want to limit outdoor exertions like long hikes to prevent breathing problems.

5. Adrian, Michigan

Adrian may have a clean-looking AQI, but don’t be fooled. The PM2.5 levels are high, and those with respiratory issues should consider this when planning outdoor activities. It’s better to play it safe and avoid overexertion outdoors.

6. Claimont, Delaware

Claimont’s PM2.5 levels also exceed the recommended limits by a significant margin. Even though it’s in the middle of our list, the pollution levels here are still a concern, particularly for those prone to respiratory issues.

7. Robesonia, Pennsylvania

With an AQI marked as good, Robesonia might not seem too bad at first glance. However, the PM2.5 levels tell a different story. Residents and visitors should be cautious about air quality, especially on days when pollution levels might spike.

8. Attleboro, Massachusetts

Attleboro’s situation is similar to Robesonia, with a relatively good AQI but concerning PM2.5 levels. If you have asthma or similar conditions, it’s smart to limit outdoor exercise and activities to ensure your health isn’t compromised.

9. Elwood, Illinois

Elwood’s ‘good’ AQI may be reassuring, but the air still contains fine particles that can irritate the lungs and airways. Wearing a mask or opting for indoor activities can be a safer choice for those with respiratory concerns.

10. Huntington, West Virginia

Even with an AQI in the ‘good’ range, the PM2.5 levels in Huntington are higher than what’s considered safe, potentially irritating lungs, particularly in people with preexisting respiratory conditions.

11. Gordonville, Pennsylvania

Gordonville presents a conundrum with low AQI but high PM2.5 levels. It’s crucial to stay aware of this pollution despite the seemingly low overall air pollution, as it can still affect your health.

12. Baldwin Park, California

In Baldwin Park, the moderate AQI shouldn’t fool you into ignoring the PM2.5 levels, which can pose risks to those with sensitive lungs, particularly during prolonged outdoor exposure.
