12 Annoying Things on the London Tube

Traveling through London on the Tube? It’s quick, it gets you where you need to go, but oh boy, it can be a test of patience. From space-invaders to noise polluters, here are twelve common peeves that can make any commute a bit of a headache. Letโ€™s go through them, and hey, maybe we can all learn something about Tube etiquette along the way!

1. People standing on the left side of the escalator

Hereโ€™s a classic โ€“ standing on the left side of the escalator. In London, this is a big no-no. The unspoken rule is simple: stand on the right, walk on the left. It helps keep things moving, especially during busy times. When someone blocks the left, it can cause a backlog and frustrate everyone behind them who might be in a rush. Itโ€™s one of those things that might not seem like a big deal, but can really start your day off on the wrong foot when youโ€™re trying to get somewhere quickly.

2. Door blockers refusing to move

Next up, door blockers. Those folks who plant themselves right by the Tube doors and wonโ€™t budge, even as more people try to squeeze in. Itโ€™s simple, really: by moving further inside the carriage, you make space for everyone. Plus, it makes it easier for people to get off at their stops. Not moving can create unnecessary delays and crowding, which no one wants during a cramped commute.

3. Loud phone calls in packed carriages

Loud phone chats in a packed carriage are just the worst. Most people are either trying to wake up with their morning coffee, catch up on a book, or simply brace themselves for the day ahead. Having to listen to someoneโ€™s loud conversation about their weekend plans or last nightโ€™s drama can be super annoying. Itโ€™s all about keeping it down and respecting everyoneโ€™s space and peace.

4. Music blasting from someoneโ€™s headphones

Love music? Great, but remember, not everyone might share your taste. Music leaking from headphones at high volume can be really distracting. Whether it’s the latest hits or some old-school rock, what’s a personal soundtrack for one can be an annoyance for another. Turning down the volume helps everyone enjoy their own tunes or silence.

5. Tourists with giant suitcases at rush hour

We get it, tourists might not know the peak hours and the hustle of the London commute. But huge suitcases during rush hour can block aisles and doors, making it hard for people to get on or off the train. If traveling with large luggage, try to find a spot near the ends of the carriage where they’re less in the way, or better yet, travel during less busy times.

6. People not letting passengers off first

This one should be obvious, right? Always let people off the train before you try to board. It makes things smoother and quicker for everyone involved. When passengers try to board before letting others off, it just clogs up the doorway and slows everything down. A little patience goes a long way here.

7. Eating smelly food on the train

Eating on the go? Choose your snacks wisely. Strong-smelling food can make the enclosed space of a Tube carriage quite unpleasant. Itโ€™s better to stick with less aromatic options that wonโ€™t invade everyone elseโ€™s personal space. Save that delicious, garlicky pizza for when you get home!

8. Manspreading on busy seats

Manspreading โ€“ when someone sits with their legs wide apart, taking up more than their fair share of space. On a crowded train, this is a real space invader move. Keeping to your own space allows everyone to sit comfortably during their travel. So, keep those knees together, guys!

9. Broken air-con on hot days

Nothing is worse on a hot day than a train carriage with broken air conditioning. It turns the space into a sauna, and not the relaxing kind. While this might be out of your control, itโ€™s still a major discomfort for everyone. Hopefully, transport maintenance keeps on top of this, especially during the summer months.

10. People jumping the queue for the barriers

Queuing is a big part of UK culture, and nothing can get Brits riled up like someone skipping the line. At the Tube station barriers, jumping the queue can not only disrupt the flow but also cause a bit of tutting and silent judgment. Itโ€™s simple: wait your turn, and everyone gets through smoothly.

11. Random service suspensions

Unexpected service suspensions are a nightmare, especially when youโ€™re in a hurry. While sometimes these are necessary for safety or maintenance, they can disrupt your travel plans significantly. Always good to check the service status before heading out to avoid getting stuck.

12. Someoneโ€™s backpack taking up a whole seat

Last but not least, bags on seats. This can be super frustrating when the train is packed, and seating is limited. Bags can sit on laps or on the floor, making room for others to sit down. Remember, bags donโ€™t need a seat, people do!
