Furnishing a UK Rental: The Real Deal

Moving into a rental in the UK? Prepare yourself for a unique set of challenges when it comes to furnishing your new home. From unexpectedly tiny rooms to rogue radiators, here’s a look at 12 things you’ll only get if you’ve been there, trying to make a rental feel like home while sticking to a budget and dealing with what’s already there.

1. The landlord says it’s ‘fully furnished’—it’s not

When your landlord says ‘fully furnished’, you might expect to walk into a place where you can comfortably live from day one. But often, ‘fully furnished’ means a couple of basic pieces that have seen better days. You might find an old bed frame, a wobbly table, and maybe a few chairs. The rest? That’s on you to figure out, turning your move-in day into a shopping scramble to find the essentials that were supposed to be included.

2. The sofa is three times too big for the room

Ever walked into your living room to find a sofa that’s so big, there’s hardly space to move around? It’s a common scene in rentals where landlords favor big, old furniture they’ve moved from place to place. This leaves you playing a real-life game of Tetris, trying to position your other belongings around this gigantic centerpiece that eats up all your space.

3. The curtains don’t reach the floor (or block light)

Those curtains in your bedroom might look nice from afar, but their real job is to block out light—a job at which they often fail spectacularly. Whether it’s because they don’t reach the floor or they’re too thin, you might find yourself waking up with the sun, despite not being an early bird. Makeshift solutions like blankets over the windows become your new best friend.

4. Arguing about which IKEA Billy bookcase fits best

Choosing furniture that fits both your space and your storage needs often leads to the great IKEA debate. The Billy bookcase series, with its range of sizes and configurations, seems like a perfect solution. Yet, you end up spending hours arguing if the tall or the wide one is better, or if it makes the room look too cramped. And let’s not even start on color matching!

5. You measure things, but still get it wrong

Equipped with a tape measure and good intentions, you confidently buy furniture that you’re sure will fit perfectly. Until it doesn’t. That new chest of drawers sticks out into the hallway, and the coffee table blocks the bathroom door. Somehow, despite measuring twice, things just don’t turn out right, and you’re left with a puzzle of impracticality.

6. Living with one awkwardly placed radiator forever

There’s always that one radiator, isn’t there? Positioned right where you wanted to put your bookshelf or TV stand. It dictates the entire layout of your room, forcing you to arrange your furniture in a way that makes little sense just to avoid blocking the heat. In the winter, you appreciate the warmth, but still, you wish it wasn’t such a central feature in your living room design.

7. You spend £200 at Argos and have no idea how

A quick trip to Argos to pick up a few household essentials somehow turns into a £200 ordeal. From kitchen gadgets that you were convinced you needed, to storage solutions to combat the lack of built-in space, your shopping basket fills up fast. And by the time you reach the checkout, you’re left wondering how a lamp and a few bins added up to that.

8. The one shelf you pray won’t collapse

It’s the shelf that holds all your heavy books, a couple of plants, and maybe even a TV. Every time you add something new, you hold your breath and cross your fingers it won’t be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Living in fear of a midnight crash, it’s a constant reminder that not all furnishings are built to last—or to handle your storage needs.

9. Convincing yourself the plastic drawers are ‘temporary’

Those plastic storage drawers you bought ‘just for now’ slowly become a permanent fixture in your home. They’re not the prettiest, but they’re functional, and you tell yourself it’s just until you find something better. Months, maybe even years pass, and they’re still there, part of your decor now, serving a purpose too critical to replace with something more stylish.

10. Furniture assembly becomes a lifestyle

The moment you move into a rental, the furniture assembly begins and it never really stops. Every new piece requires an allen key, a set of instructions, and an afternoon to put together. It’s a lifestyle born out of necessity, a skill you hone over time. Before you know it, you’re the go-to person for all your friends’ furniture assembly needs.

11. Every piece must be multipurpose or it’s useless

In a small rental, every furniture piece must serve multiple purposes or it just takes up too much space. Ottomans double as storage, desks turn into dining tables, and beds come with drawers underneath. It’s about being smart with your space, choosing pieces that work harder so you can make the most of what you’ve got.

12. You give up and just sit on the floor for a week

After days of moving, assembling, and re-arranging, sometimes you just give up and the floor becomes the best seat in the house. Surrounded by half-built furniture and tools, you take a moment to relax. It’s a humble start in your new place, but it’s yours, and that’s what counts. Eventually, you’ll have it all set up, but for now, a cushion on the floor isn’t so bad.
