Visiting an American grocery store can be quite the experience for foreigners. The shopping habits here are distinct and often surprising to those from other countries. From the size of the shopping carts to the variety of items available, these practices reflect a unique cultural approach to grocery shopping.

1. Buying in Bulk

Americans love buying items in large quantities. It’s not rare for them to leave the store with a year’s supply of paper towels or a giant box of cereal. This habit is especially handy if you have a big family or just don’t like shopping very often.

2. Super-Sized Carts

Have you seen the size of shopping carts in American stores? They’re huge! This makes it easier for Americans to take advantage of those bulk buying deals, or if you’re like me, it helps when I decide I need more snacks than I planned.

3. Pre-Bagged Produce

In the U.S., it’s common to find fruits and vegetables already bagged for you. This might seem odd, but it speeds things up at checkout and keeps things sanitary. However, it does mean you can’t pick each apple or potato individually.

4. Self-Checkout Lanes

More and more stores now let you scan and bag your groceries yourself. It’s a bit of work, but it can save time during busy hours, and personally. These are more common abroad now but they started in the USA.

5. Coupon Clipping

Americans love a good deal. Many take the time to clip coupons or use digital ones. Loyalty cards are also big here, offering discounts that can really add up.

6. 24/7 Shopping Availability

Some grocery stores here never close. Whether it’s late at night or early in the morning, you can shop whenever it suits you. This is perfect for night owls or early birds.

7. Free Samples

Who doesn’t love freebies? American stores often offer samples of everything from new cheeses to specialty coffees. It’s a great way to try before you buy.

8. Extensive Choices

Sometimes, choosing a product can be overwhelming due to the sheer number of brands and variations available. Whether it’s cereal, bread, or yogurt, the choices are endless.

Depending on the season, you might find an aisle full of just Halloween decorations or summer picnic supplies. These thematic aisles help celebrate different holidays or events. They’re not as common, and at least, not in the same size, abroad.

10. Loyalty Programs

Signing up for loyalty programs is common and can lead to big savings. These programs often provide personalized discounts, which feel like a win every time I shop. Loyalty programs can also provide you with points to buy plane tickets, which is more rare abroad.

11. Impulse Buy Sections

Right before you check out, there’s usually an area filled with tempting items like candy or magazines. It’s strategically placed to grab your attention while you wait in line.

12. The Abundance of Processed Foods
