When people from other countries visit or move to the United States, they often find some aspects of American housing quite surprising. That was my case! When I moved to the USA, I noticed a lot of differences regarding housing habits and features. These features, which might seem ordinary to Americans, can be quite unexpected to those from different backgrounds. Here, I’ve listed 10 American housing things that surprise foreigners.

1. Living in a trailer park is common

In the U.S., living in a trailer park is more common than in many other countries. These communities consist of mobile homes or trailers that are a more affordable housing option. They offer a sense of community and can be found across the country, providing a unique living experience that combines affordability with a tight-knit neighborhood feel. They’re also much cheaper which allows smaller budget units to move closer to cities.

2.tent neighborhoods for homeless people

Visitors might be surprised to see entire neighborhoods made up of tents in some urban areas. These tent cities often arise due to housing crises and the inability of some individuals to secure permanent homes. They reflect a critical aspect of urban housing challenges in many large American cities like Los Angeles.

3. Wooden houses for the most part

The predominant use of wood in American home construction can be quite surprising. Unlike many countries where concrete or brick is more common, wooden structures are favored in the U.S. due to their cost-effectiveness and quicker build time, offering flexibility in design and a classic aesthetic.

4. AC is also always installed

Air conditioning is a standard feature in American homes and is considered essential, not a luxury. The U.S. experiences diverse climates, and AC units ensure that homes remain comfortable throughout hot summers, a fact of life in many parts of the country.

5. Carpeting

Wall-to-wall carpeting is another feature that might seem unusual to foreigners. Many American homes favor carpets in living spaces and bedrooms, providing a cozy feel and warmth that are particularly appreciated in colder climates.

6. Walk-in closets

Walk-in closets are a popular feature in American homes, offering ample space for clothes and personal items. This kind of closet is especially valued for its convenience and the ability to organize and store items effectively, a luxury not always available in homes abroad.

7. Basements for family rooms

In the U.S., basements are often converted into family rooms or recreational spaces. This use of additional square footage not only maximizes the living space within a home but also provides a separate area for entertainment and relaxation, distinct from the main living areas.

8. Having a deck

Many American homes feature a deck, an outdoor platform that extends from the house, usually made of wood. Decks are valued for their outdoor recreational benefits, providing a perfect spot for barbecues, family gatherings, or a quiet place to enjoy nature.

9. Large refrigerator

The size of refrigerators in American kitchens can be quite striking to foreigners. These large appliances reflect the American tendency towards buying food in bulk and the preference for a wide variety of chilled food and beverage options readily available at any time.
