Heading to California in winter? It’s a great idea! I can never say one bad thing about visiting California. It’s one of my favorite states even though a lot of Americans aren’t big fans of it! California has so many national parks, beautiful European like towns and so much more. You can’t really go wrong there.

But, there are a few common mistakes visitors often make. From packing the wrong clothes to missing out on the state’s unique winter beauty, hereโ€™s your guide to making the most of your winter trip to the Golden State. Keep these tips in mind, and youโ€™re sure to have a wonderful experience, enjoying everything California has to offer during the colder months.

1. Not realizing Northern and Southern California have different climates

California is huge, and its climate varies big time. While Southern California enjoys mild winters, Northern California can get pretty chilly, and you might even see some snow. So, if you’re thinking of heading to cities like San Francisco or Lake Tahoe, pack a warmer jacket! On the other hand, Los Angeles and San Diego are much milder. Knowing this can really help you pack and plan your activities better.

2. Underpacking warm clothes for visits to higher elevations

When you visit places like Yosemite or Big Bear, remember they’re a lot higher up, which means it’s colderโ€”like, winter jacket colder. A lot of visitors get caught off guard by how chilly it can get, especially if you’re planning a hike or a day in the snow. So, throw that extra sweater and a warm hat in your suitcase.

3. Forgetting that some National Parks may be snow-covered

A winter wonderland awaits in many of California’s National Parks during the colder months. Parks like Yosemite are stunning with snow-covered trees and frozen lakes, but that also means you need to prepare for snowy conditions. Bring suitable clothing, and check if you need chains for your car tires.

4. Not taking advantage of fewer tourists in major attractions

Winter is a secret gem for visiting popular spots without the crowds. Places like Disneyland or the San Diego Zoo are much quieter and more enjoyable. You can really take your time and see everything without rushing through crowds.

5. Assuming all beaches will be warm for swimming

Hold off on packing just swimwear if you’re heading to a California beach in winter. Most beaches, especially in Northern California, are pretty cold and not ideal for swimming. However, theyโ€™re perfect for peaceful walks and sunsets.

6. Ignoring the potential for rainy weather, especially in Northern California

Yes, California does get rain, and quite a bit of it in the north! If you’re visiting these areas, pack an umbrella or a waterproof jacket. This way, you can still enjoy your day, no matter the weather.

7. Not checking road conditions for routes like Highway 1

The scenic Highway 1 is a beautiful drive but can get tricky in winter with rain and fog. It’s smart to check road conditions and closures before you head out. Being prepared can save you a lot of time and stress.

8. Expecting ski resorts to always have good snow conditions

While many of Californiaโ€™s ski resorts offer fantastic skiing, snow levels can vary. Always check the snow report before you go. Sometimes, lower snowfall can affect which trails and lifts are open.

9. Skipping indoor attractions during rainy days

Rainy day? No problem. California has plenty of awesome indoor spots to check out, from museums like the Getty to aquariums or even fun coffee shops and bookstores. These places can turn a rainy day into one of the best parts of your trip.

10. Not booking lodging near ski resorts far in advance

Ski season means busy season for places near ski resorts. To avoid missing out, book your stay well in advance. This way, youโ€™re not stuck driving long distances to the slopes every day.

11. Underestimating traffic during holiday season or winter events

California can get pretty busy around the holidays, not just at the shops but on the roads too. If youโ€™re traveling during these times, allow extra time for traffic. This can help keep your trip relaxed and enjoyable.

12. Forgetting to enjoy the unique winter landscapes, like snow-covered vineyards
