The 9 States Americans Are Leaving the Most
In recent years, the socio-economic landscape in the U.S. has seen major shifts. With so many states to choose from, more Americans are searching for better job opportunities, higher living standards, and more affordable housing in new places.
This has resulted in a noticeable population decline in certain states. Based on data from the American Census Bureau, letโs take a look at the top 10 states where residents are moving away in large numbers.
9. New Jersey
The Garden State has seen its population growth stunted by high taxes, costly living expenses, and a tough business environment. Its proximity to New York and Philadelphia means residents have options to live more affordably nearby without losing out on job opportunities or city life. New Jersey lost 6,250 residents from mid-2021 to mid-2022, indicating a trend of people seeking better value for their lifestyle elsewhere.
8. Ohio
Known for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Ohio faces a tune of departure as residents leave due to soaring taxes, sluggish job growth, and deteriorating infrastructure. The search for improved opportunities has led to a loss of 13,513 Ohioans since 2020, showing a clear desire for change among the state’s residents.
7. Illinois
Illinois is grappling with severe financial problems, including billions in unpaid bills and a pension crisis. High taxes and job scarcity have pushed residents to neighboring states. With a decline of 32,826 people from July 2022 to July 2023, it’s evident that Illinois’ financial challenges are too great for many of its citizens.
6. Connecticut
Despite its New England charm and slow pace of life, Connecticut’s high taxes, struggling economy, and poor job market have made it less attractive. As a result, an estimated 88,733 people left the state in 2022, searching for a place where their dollar goes further and opportunities are more abundant.
5. Massachusetts
Massachusetts, a beacon of higher education with institutions like Harvard and MIT, is experiencing a brain drain as professionals move for better prospects. The state saw nearly 111,000 residents depart between April 2020 and July 2022, underlining the impact of high housing costs and challenging job markets on retaining talent.
4. Michigan
Michigan’s beautiful landscapes and outdoor activities haven’t been enough to keep residents from leaving due to job declines and high taxes. With 167,000 people moving out in 2022, the state faces the challenge of reversing this trend despite ongoing efforts to rejuvenate cities like Detroit and expand its tech industry.
3. Pennsylvania
Home to rich American history and beloved sports teams, Pennsylvania’s high taxes, aging population, and lack of job opportunities have spurred a significant resident exodus. Over 318,000 people left the Keystone State between January 2021 and February 2022, seeking better living conditions elsewhere.
2. California
California’s reputation for innovation and entertainment hasn’t prevented a mass departure, driven by the high cost of living, expensive housing, and rising crime rates. Between 2021 and 2022, about 818,000 Californians sought greener pastures, indicating a shift in the balance between the state’s allure and its livability.
1. New York
The Empire State, particularly New York City, is witnessing an exodus due to skyrocketing living costs and political contention. Despite losing 884,000 residents since 2020, New York’s global financial and cultural significance remains unshaken, even as its population dynamics shift.
This trend of Americans moving from certain states in search of better opportunities, living standards, and affordability highlights the evolving preferences and priorities of the U.S. population. It reflects a broader search for a quality of life that aligns with personal and economic aspirations, reshaping the demographic landscape of the nation.
