9 Travel Mistakes And Their Sad consequences That you Should Avoid
In an attempt to help others in their adventures, several avid travelers shared their worst travel mistakes on a popular forum. No-one is ever safe from making a mistake when planning their travels.
We’ve made mistakes of our own too! So, in case you’re also planning your next trip, here are some mistakes to avoid to ensure you can have the best time!
1. Wrong Country, Sorry!
One of the users shared the following: “My wife booked a hotel in the wrong country, didn’t find out till 7pm the night we were staying”.
This mistake could happen to anyone. It’s so easy to be distracted while booking and ticking the wrong boxes by mistake. The good news is, there is usually always another hotel that can host you last minute.
2. Better Than Late
One user shared that they arrived one day earlier in the airport. Other users were amused and all agreed that it is better to be early than sorry. That said, a couple hours early is generally plenty of time for flying.
3. Is It Really A Mistake Though?
One user shared the following heartwarming story: “Accepting a date with my tour guide in Egypt. We are now engaged and navigating how to live 50/50 in Egypt and Canada (my native country). After multiple trips to Egypt, that has become one expensive date ๐ I wouldnโt trade it for anything though.”
4. Sometimes You Just Forget
One user shared this funny story: “Sitting at the gate for a departing flight out of Mexico City, watched everyone get on board and the flight leave. Went up to the gate for the next flight an hour or so later and found out I was actually on the earlier one.”
5. Wrong Kind Of Juice
Renting a car abroad is easy but sometimes the differences in gas names can get confusing and lead to mechanical issues! This user shared: “I put the wrong kind of gas in a rental car while in Italy. Didnโt realize until the car started to sputter and eventually die in the middle of the highwayThankfully I had rental insurance and was able to get a tow truck out to me.”
6. Sometimes You Get Lucky
The following is quite the surprising story and a mistake that you’d be better off not making. The user shared: “I managed to get lost and get outside the airport in USA without going through immigration on a connecting flight. So I just stopped a police officer and said, officer, I am very sorry, but I think I am here illegal now without a visa.I had to go with homeland security to show them how I did it…”
7. Oops
The water isn’t the same everywhere and sometimes you’re better off drinking something else. This user shared the following: “I drank a small glass of tap water in a tiny village in Northern France because the water is safe to drink in Europe, right?I have never been that sick in my life.
On the upside, I can now say, “I am vomiting and have diarrhea, please help me” in French.”
8. The Clock Is Ticking
When booking your flights, make sure to look at the dates of arrival. This user had an issue, see for yourself: “Booked a connecting flight, but didn’t take into account the first flight was overnight so it ended on a different date. So I had a flight for the wrong day…”
9. Planning to Much to do
One user shared the following: “Going to Europe and trying to do too much in a day. I had mostly been to Japan and the Middle East pre-covid and had no idea how strict timed admissions would be or how hard it would be to work around them.”
