11 Surprising Things I’ve Learned By Living Abroad
11 Surprising Things I’ve Learned By Living Abroad
Living abroad for six years across the USA, Ireland, Canada, and England has given me unique insights into different cultures and systems, far from my native France. Here are some surprising lessons I’ve learned along the way, reflecting on various aspects of life and society.
1. Teachers Are Underpaid Everywhere
Everywhere I’ve lived, I’ve seen that teachers are consistently underpaid. Despite sufficient funding being available, it seems that it never makes its way to the education system adequately. This issue is widespread, affecting many countries and directly impacting educational quality.
2. Comparing Medical Systems
While no medical system is perfect, I found that France, Canada, and England offer superior healthcare compared to the USA and Ireland. France excels in coverage and service quality, whereas Canada and England provide better quality and cost efficiency than the others.
3. The Kindness of Strangers
Contrary to the often grim depiction in the media, my experience has shown me that most people are inherently kind and generous. No matter their origin, most individuals aspire simply to be happy and feel loved, a universal desire that binds us.
4. Our Shared Humanity
Having met people from diverse backgrounds, it’s clear that we share more similarities than differences. While customs and habits can vary, our fundamental human nature remains constant. It’s a perspective I wish was more prevalent in media portrayals, rather than focusing on divisions.

5. Universal Housing Market Challenges
Accessing the housing market has become increasingly difficult for our generation, regardless of where you live. The challenges are consistent across borders, highlighting a broader issue affecting young people worldwide.
6. Acceptance of Foreigners
In my travels, I’ve noticed a general acceptance towards foreigners and immigrants. The common fear that foreigners are taking jobs is not as prevalent as some might think, showing a welcoming attitude in many communities.
7. Rethinking the Term “Expat”
Initially, I didn’t realize the term “expat” carried different connotations in English, often distinguishing white immigrants from others. Now, I prefer to identify myself as an immigrant to avoid these distinctions.
8. A Taste of Global Cuisine
While France is renowned for its delicate and elegant cuisine, I’ve discovered that other countries also boast delicious meals. The variety and quality of food worldwide have been a delightful revelation.

9. Judging Without Experience
It’s easy to judge other countries without firsthand experience. I’ve encountered many opinions formed solely from stereotypes or second-hand information, which often don’t reflect the true nature of those places.
10. Varied Renting and Banking Rules
Renting and banking regulations can differ significantly from one country to another, often without clear reasons. These differences can be arbitrary and entrenched, with little consideration given to whether other systems might offer better solutions.
11. Misplaced Pride in Education Systems
Every country seems to believe their education system is the best. However, from my experience, each has its strengths and weaknesses. A combination of different educational approaches might actually serve our children better.
