10 Most Overrated Tourist Attractions in the USA (and Where to Go Instead)
When it comes to traveling, everyone’s got a bucket list of must-see spots. But sometimes, those popular tourist attractions don’t quite live up to the hype. Don’t worry, though – if you find yourself disappointed, there are plenty of underrated gems waiting to be discovered.
Here’s a rundown of some of the most overrated tourist spots in the USA and where you might want to go instead to get a better bang for your travel buck.
1. Times Square, NYC
New York City’s Times Square is famous worldwide, but if you’ve been there, you know it’s also ridiculously crowded and feels more like an outdoor mall than the heart of the Big Apple. Instead, why not take a stroll on the High Line? This elevated park built on a historic freight rail line offers not only peace away from the crowds but also unique views of the city’s architecture and the Hudson River. It’s a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle below.
2. Hollywood Walk of Fame, LA
Walking along the Hollywood Walk of Fame might sound exciting, but it can quickly turn into a letdown when you realize it’s just a crowded sidewalk covered with stars. For a better time, head up to Griffith Observatory. You won’t just escape the crowds; you’ll get stunning views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood sign, plus the chance to peek through a super-powerful telescope.

3. The Alamo, San Antonio
The Alamo is a key piece of Texas history, but visitors often find it smaller than anticipated. If you’re looking for something more engaging in San Antonio, try the River Walk. This charming network of walkways along the San Antonio River is lined with shops, restaurants, and beautiful scenery—a perfect place to spend the day.
4. Niagara Falls (U.S. side)
Niagara Falls is breathtaking, but the views from the U.S. side can be a bit limited. I personally think it’s still a worthy experience, but most visitors find the U.S. side way too commercial. Instead, i recommend going over to the Canadian side. You can simply walk there but be mindful you might need proper documentation. For a another impressive nature experience, drive a little way out to Watkins Glen State Park in New York. Known for its beautiful gorges and waterfalls, this park offers some truly scenic walking trails.
5. Las Vegas Strip
The glittering lights of the Las Vegas Strip are iconic, but everything there—from dining to entertainment—can be expensive and feel a bit repetitive, at least to some! Just a short drive away, Red Rock Canyon offers stunning desert landscapes and plenty of outdoor activities like hiking and climbing, which can be a great way to recharge.
6. The Liberty Bell, Philadelphia
The Liberty Bell is an American icon, but the long wait to see a small exhibit can be frustrating. A better choice in Philly is Independence Hall, where you can soak up a lot more history without the long lines, and see where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and adopted.
7. South Beach, Miami
South Beach is famous for its nightlife and beaches, but it can also be overly crowded and expensive. For a more relaxed vibe, consider driving down to the Florida Keys. The laid-back atmosphere, coupled with stunning ocean views and excellent snorkeling, makes for a perfect getaway.
8. Mount Rushmore, South Dakota
Mount Rushmore is an iconic landmark, but many visitors find the monument smaller than expected. The nearby Badlands National Park, however, offers expansive and dramatic landscapes that you can explore through numerous hiking trails and scenic drives.
9. Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts
Plymouth Rock, supposed to mark the Pilgrims’ landing site, often leaves visitors underwhelmed due to its small size. A better alternative is Cape Cod with its beautiful beaches, quaint towns, and scenic lighthouses. It’s a wonderful spot for a more extended, relaxing vacation.
10. The Four Corners Monument
The Four Corners Monument, where four states meet, is an interesting geographical spot but doesn’t offer much beyond a photo op. Instead, head to Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border. The stunning red sandstone formations and sweeping desert vistas provide a spectacular backdrop that’s rich in both beauty and Native American culture.
