Travel influencers often share breathtaking photos and exciting tales from their adventures. However, their actions can sometimes annoy other tourists and locals. Here are ten common habits of travel influencers that might be less appreciated by others sharing the same spaces.

Blocking Scenic Views for Photos

Influencers can spend a lot of time trying to get the perfect picture. This often involves blocking views of famous landmarks or natural wonders, making it hard for other visitors to enjoy the sights. While they capture their ideal shot, others are left waiting or have to settle for a less-than-ideal view.

Ignoring Local Etiquette

Some influencers overlook the importance of local customs and traditions. This can lead to behaviors that might offend local communities. When influencers ignore these cultural norms, it not only reflects poorly on them but can also tarnish the reputation of tourists in general.

Overcrowding Popular Spots

When influencers promote hidden gems, these places can quickly become crowded. This surge in popularity can ruin the natural charm and tranquility that once made these spots special. The sudden increase in visitors can overwhelm local resources and spoil the experience for everyone.

Trespassing for the Perfect Shot

In their quest for the perfect photo, some influencers do not hesitate to enter private or restricted areas. This behavior is not only illegal but can also lead to disturbances and damage. For instance, stepping onto the roofs of private buildings in Greece for photos is disrespectful and inappropriate.

Using Drones in No-Fly Zones

Drones can capture stunning aerial shots, but using them in no-fly zones can lead to problems. These areas are often restricted to protect wildlife or ensure visitor safety and privacy. Flying drones in these zones can disturb the peace and lead to hefty fines.

Littering or Leaving Behind Props

Some photo sessions leave more behind than footprints. Influencers who leave trash or props at shooting locations contribute to pollution and spoil the natural beauty of these areas. Cleaning up these left behind items then becomes a problem for local authorities or other visitors.

Staging Inauthentic Experiences

Creating overly staged scenes can set unrealistic expectations for followers. When followers visit the same locations, they might be disappointed that the experience does not match the glorified version seen online, leading to frustration and disillusionment.

Being Loud and Disruptive

Influencers narrating videos or directing photo shoots can be loud. This noise disrupts the serene environment that many visitors seek. Such disruptions can detract from the natural ambiance and disturb wildlife, ruining the experience for others in the vicinity.

Not Supporting Local Businesses

Focusing solely on popular attractions without patronizing local businesses can have a negative impact on local economies. When influencers fail to showcase local shops and eateries, they miss a chance to support the communities that host them.

Endangering Themselves and Others

Attempting dangerous stunts for thrilling content is risky. Such behaviors can lead to serious accidents and put not just the influencers, but also other tourists and local rescue teams at risk. For example, the Cliffs of Moher (as pictured) have seen many deaths from people falling over the cliffs. When taking these pictures, we were super safe and even though the angle makes it look like I’m close to the edge, I was actually pretty far. In comparison, some people were sitting right on the edge which is completely unsafe! Safe conduct is paramount to ensure everyone’s safety during travels.

These habits of travel influencers can affect the experiences of many others. While sharing travel experiences is valuable, it’s important to do so responsibly and respectfully.
