High Protein chicken Waffle Burger Recipe

Save to Find It Later!

There are some recipes that just look too good not to tryโ€”and this one definitely falls in that category. A chicken waffle burger thatโ€™s crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and stacked with sauce and fresh toppings? You donโ€™t have to ask me twice. Itโ€™s the kind of thing that feels like a guilty pleasure but is actually full of protein and made with simple, everyday ingredients.

I love how fun and unexpected this one is. Itโ€™s not your regular burger and not your average waffle. But once you bite into it? Youโ€™ll get why people canโ€™t stop talking about it. Itโ€™s perfect for a weekend lunch or a casual dinner when you want something satisfying and just a little over the topโ€”in the best way.

Utensils And Waffle Maker I used for this recipe

I used this waffle maker. Its a mini waffle maker so it’s perfect to make bun-sized waffles. I find that it gets hot really quickly (about 3 minutes) and the price is unbeatable.

I also used these cutting boards. They are my new favorites honestly! They are easy to clean and don’t warp when wet!

Finally, I used this vegetable chopper for my carrots and tomatoes. It’s just handy to have when you have to batch prep a lot of ingredients.

Note I have included alternatives that are equivalent so you have a few options. Check them out here.

Can you make this recipe without a waffle maker?

Yes! I like these better as waffles but you can absolutely still make these without one. They will be more like grilled chicken patties!

Why This Recipe

This recipe went viral for a reasonโ€”but when I looked at the comments, so many people were disappointed. Their waffles didnโ€™t hold up, the chicken was dry, the instructions were vague, or it just didnโ€™t turn out like the video. So I decided to fix that.

This version is clearer, more reliable, and actually works. Shredding the chicken finely, mixing it properly with egg and seasoning, and pressing it long enough in the waffle maker makes all the difference. No guessworkโ€”just a crispy, flavorful chicken waffle that holds together like a dream.

What to Serve It With

This chicken waffle burger is the kind of thing that steals the spotlight, but the right side dish makes it a full meal. I served mine with a simple salad and some fries because I wanted a mix of fresh and crispyโ€”but honestly, there are a lot of ways to switch it up depending on your mood.

If you’re keeping it light, go for:
โ€“ A crunchy side salad with lemon vinaigrette or balsamic glaze. Something like cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and red onion works great.
โ€“ A vinegar-based slaw with cabbage and carrots for a tangy contrast.
โ€“ Pickled veggies or sauerkraut if you want that salty-sour bite to balance the richness.

If you want something heartier:
โ€“ Sweet potato fries, either baked or air-fried, are a solid choice and go really well with the flavors in the burger.
โ€“ Baked or smashed potatoes with a little sour cream or Greek yogurt on top.
โ€“ Roasted vegetablesโ€”think zucchini, bell peppers, or carrotsโ€”if you want something hot but not too heavy.

And if you’re leaning into comfort food mode:
โ€“ Mac and cheese (yes, even the boxed kind) totally works here.
โ€“ Corn on the cob with a little butter and chili powder.
โ€“ Or even just a handful of potato chips if you’re keeping things extra low-effort.

This waffle burger is flexible, filling, and already packs flavor, so you donโ€™t need anything complicated on the side. Just pick something that balances it outโ€”or complements your sauce situationโ€”and youโ€™re good to go.

Tips to get it right

  • Use a blender or food processor to shred the chicken so it binds well with the egg.
  • Press your waffle maker down firmly and donโ€™t open it too earlyโ€”six minutes is usually the sweet spot.
  • Donโ€™t skip the sauce! It pulls the whole thing together.

Ingredients

  • 150g cooked chicken breast, shredded
  • 1 egg
  • Old El Paso chili con carne seasoning (or your favorite spice mix)
  • 15g mayo (about 1 tbsp)
  • 15g ketchup (about 1 tbsp)
  • 1 tsp pickle juice
  • Lettuce, tomato, pickles, carrots
  • 1 slice of chorizo, diced

Step 1: Bake and Shred the Chicken

Bake your chicken breast at 190ยฐC (375ยฐF) for 30 minutes or until cooked through. Let it rest a few minutes, then shred finelyโ€”I use a blender to get it smooth and even.

Step 2: Make the Waffle Mix

In a bowl, mix the shredded chicken with one egg and a good sprinkle of seasoning. It should be thick, moist, and hold together like a burger patty.

Scoop half the mixture into a preheated waffle maker and press firmly. Cook for about 6 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Repeat for the second half.

Step 3: Make the Sauce

Mix the mayo, ketchup, and pickle juice in a small bowl until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

Step 4: Build Your Burger

Spread the sauce on one waffle, then pile on your toppingsโ€”lettuce, tomato, pickles, shredded carrot, and the chopped chorizo. Top with the second waffle and press down gently.

And Voila

It’s super easy to make and you can meal prep your chicken in advance as well to make it quicker. This is also the perfect recipe to use leftover chicken!
