10 Rude Beach Tourist Behaviors That Will Get You The Look

Heading to the beach is pretty much everyoneโ€™s favorite way to enjoy a sunny day. But, just like in any shared space, there are certain behaviors that can make the experience less enjoyable for others.

We all want to have a good time, relax, and return home feeling refreshed, right? Well, here are some common rude behaviors that can really put a damper on that beach day vibe. Letโ€™s go over what not to do, so we can all keep the beach fun and welcoming for everyone.

1. Playing Loud Music Without Considering Others

Imagine youโ€™re lying on the beach, waves crashing, sun beaming down, but instead of the sound of the sea, all you can hear is blaring music from the next towel over.

Not everyone shares the same taste in tunes, and whatโ€™s a party playlist for one might be a headache for another. Itโ€™s simple: if you want to play music, use headphones or keep the volume down so only your group can hear it. This way, everyone can enjoy their own version of peace and relaxation.

2. Leaving Trash Behind on the Sand

Nobody likes to see garbage strewn across the beach; itโ€™s not only unpleasant, it’s harmful to wildlife and the environment.

Always clean up after yourself. Bring a bag specifically for trash, or better yet, pack items that donโ€™t create much waste. Leaving the beach cleaner than you found it is a win-win for everyone and ensures that our beaches stay beautiful for years to come.

3. Setting Up Too Close to Other Beachgoers

Personal space is important, especially on a crowded beach day. It can be really annoying when someone plunks their stuff down right next to you, invading that personal bubble. A good rule of thumb is to keep a towelโ€™s length between you and the next group. This gives everyone a bit more privacy and room to spread out.

4. Ignoring Swim Zone Markers or Lifeguard Instructions

Those flags and markers on the beach are there for a reason; to keep everyone safe. When someone ignores these and swims outside designated areas, it not only puts them at risk but also makes life hard for lifeguards.

Plus, it can be disruptive to other swimmers who are trying to stay within the safe zones. Listening to lifeguard instructions and paying attention to swim zone markers is essential for a safe beach day.

5. Letting Kids Splash Others in the Water

Kids love playing in the water, and thatโ€™s totally fine, but itโ€™s important to be mindful of others around you. When kids (or even adults!) start splashing wildly, it can be annoying and even stressful, particularly for those who are trying to enjoy a quiet swim. Keep an eye on your little ones and encourage them to be considerate of the people nearby.

6. Smoking in Non-Smoking Areas

Many beaches have designated smoking areas to keep the air clean and fresh for everyone. Smoking outside these designated areas, especially around kids or people who are eating, is not only rude but often against the rules. Always look for posted signs and respect the beachโ€™s smoking policies.

7. Taking Photos of Strangers Without Consent

With everyone carrying a camera in their pocket these days, itโ€™s tempting to snap photos all the time. But remember, not everyone wants to be in your vacation pics.

Taking photos of strangers without their permission is a breach of privacy and can make people feel uncomfortable or upset. Always ask before taking a photo that includes other beachgoers.

8. Bringing Glass Bottles That Can Break in the Sand

Glass and bare feet are a bad mix. If glass bottles break in the sand, they can easily hurt someone. Opt for plastic or metal containers when packing drinks for the beach. Itโ€™s safer for everyone and often required by beach regulations.

9. Not Keeping Pets Leashed or Under Control

Pets can be great beach buddies, but only if theyโ€™re well-behaved and under control. An unleashed pet can be a nuisance, knocking over items, jumping on people, or causing disturbances. Most beaches that allow pets require them to be leashed. Make sure your furry friend is not causing trouble for others enjoying their day.

10. Hogging Beach Amenities (Showers, Changing Rooms) Longer Than Necessary

After a long day at the beach, everyone wants a turn to rinse off or change. Spending more time than necessary in showers or changing rooms can be really frustrating for those waiting in line. Be quick and considerate, so everyone can have their turn.
