UK Rail Disruption Expected Over Christmas and New Year
Major Train Disruption Expected Across the UK This Christmas Due to Engineering Works and Reduced Timetables
Train passengers across the UK are being warned to expect major disruption between 23 December 2025 and 2 January 2026, as National Rail prepares for one of the largest sets of Christmas engineering works in recent years.
The works coincide with the busiest travel period of the year and will affect several key intercity and commuter routes, with reduced timetables, diverted services and full line closures planned on selected dates.

What National Rail Has Announced
According to National Rail Enquiries, essential upgrades taking place over the Christmas and New Year period will require temporary shutdowns on major parts of the network. Timetable changes will apply nationwide, though disruption will be most concentrated around:
- London terminals, including Euston, Liverpool Street and Paddington
- Northern routes, particularly Manchester–Liverpool and Leeds–Huddersfield corridors
- Cross-country services through the Midlands
National Rail says the works are needed to “improve reliability and modernise ageing infrastructure” ahead of the 2026 timetable expansion.
What Passengers Should Expect
Travellers should prepare for:
- Fewer trains per hour
- Earlier last trains on several routes
- Rail replacement buses, especially on Boxing Day
- Longer journey times due to diversions
- Complete closures on some intercity lines on 25–26 December
With many services already heavily booked, passengers are advised to check schedules before travelling, allow extra time, and avoid non-essential rail journeys on the most disrupted dates.
Why It Matters
The Christmas period consistently delivers the year’s largest passenger numbers, and rail disruption can have a ripple effect on road traffic and airport transfers. With this year’s engineering programme running for 11 straight days, some passengers may choose alternative travel methods altogether.
National Rail says it will publish daily service updates and urges travellers to plan ahead.
