10 Things Americans Think Britain Gets Right That America Doesn’t

Save to Find It Later!

When looking at how things work in Britain compared to America, there are a few standout things that seem to hit the mark over in the UK. From how people get around to how they spend their free time, it seems like Brits have figured out a few things that Americans feel could be better back home. Let’s take a fun tour and see what these are!

1. Public Transport

Ever noticed how in movies, everyone in London hops on the Tube or a double-decker bus? Well, it’s not just for show! The public transport system in Britain really does make getting around the city, or even the country, much easier and often faster than driving. People in the U.S. often wish their cities could have such efficient bus and train systems. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about making life easier and the air cleaner by cutting down on car use.

2. Walkable Communities

In Britain, many towns and cities are set up so you can get to shops, schools, parks, and more just by walking. It’s great because it means less time sitting in traffic and more time enjoying your neighborhood. This is something a lot of Americans would love more of—communities where daily errands don’t require a car.

3. Annual Leave Policies

Did you know that in Britain, most workers are entitled to around 28 days of paid holiday per year? Imagine all the extra trips or simply days off relaxing you could enjoy. In America, the standard is much less, often around 10-15 days. Many Americans think that the British way encourages a happier, less stressed work environment.

4. Access to Healthcare

In Britain, the National Health Service (NHS) provides healthcare that’s free at the point of use for everyone. This means less worrying about big medical bills or whether you can afford to see a doctor. Many Americans find this system appealing, especially when facing their own often costly medical expenses.

5. Historic Preservation

The UK does a brilliant job of keeping its rich history alive by preserving old buildings and sites. Walking through places like York or Bath, you feel like you’re stepping back in time. This respect for history is something many Americans admire and wish was more prevalent in the U.S., where old buildings are often torn down instead of restored.

6. Public Footpaths

Britain is crisscrossed with public footpaths, which means you can walk through much of the countryside on designated paths. These rights of way invite both locals and tourists to explore scenic areas freely. Many Americans love this idea and wish they had more access to such open, natural spaces at home.

7. Village Life

There’s something special about British villages that many Americans find very appealing. The close-knit communities, local shops, and beautiful, peaceful settings seem like a perfect place to live. It’s a contrast to the often busy and sprawling cities many Americans are used to.

8. Urban Planning

British cities often score high for their layout and design, which prioritize public spaces, green areas, and efficient transport options. Good urban planning makes cities more livable and enjoyable. Many people in the U.S. wish their cities could take some tips from across the pond and focus more on these aspects.

9. Easier International Travel

Being closer to other countries makes international travel from the UK much easier and often cheaper. Many Americans envy how Brits can just pop over to Paris or Amsterdam for a weekend. It’s a bit harder from the U.S., where even the nearest country is often a few hours away by plane.

10. Work-Life Balance

The UK seems to do a better job at balancing work and life. Maybe it’s those extra vacation days or cultural attitudes towards work; either way, it’s something many Americans think could be improved at home. More time for family, hobbies, and relaxation sounds pretty good to just about everyone, doesn’t it?
