12 Things Brits Would Be Shocked to Learn Aren’t Normal Everywhere in America

Save to Find It Later!

When you think about America, images of skyscrapers, big cars, and sprawling suburbs might pop into your head. But not everything you see in movies is typical for everyone across the States. From housing styles to weather patterns, life in the U.S. can be quite different depending on where you are. Let’s take a look at a few things that might surprise Brits about how varied American life can be.

1. Not every American lives in a detached suburban house

While many TV shows feature large, detached houses with sprawling lawns, this isn’t the reality for everyone in America. In big cities like New York or San Francisco, most people live in apartments or townhouses. These living spaces are often smaller due to the high cost of real estate and the desire to live close to city centers where amenities and workplaces are nearby.

2. Not everyone has central air conditioning

It might come as a surprise, but not all American homes have central air conditioning. In areas with milder climates, such as the Pacific Northwest, many people rely on the natural cool air and may use portable fans or window units only on the particularly hot days. This means summers can be a bit warmer inside compared to homes in hotter states where central air is a must.

3. Not every neighbourhood has an HOA

Homeowners Associations (HOAs) are common in many U.S. suburbs, managing everything from how high your grass should be to the color of your house. However, not every neighborhood falls under an HOA, which can be a big relief for those who prefer less oversight and more personal freedom in how they manage their property.

4. Some American cities are highly walkable

Forget about needing a car for everything; some American cities are perfect for walking. Places like Boston, New York, and San Francisco have excellent walkability scores. Here, you can easily get by without a car, thanks to good public transport systems and everything being just a short walk away.

5. Not everyone drives an enormous car

While big trucks and SUVs are certainly common in the U.S., not everyone drives a huge vehicle. In cities, you’ll find plenty of smaller cars, which are easier to park and better on gas. This choice reflects the practical needs and environmental concerns of urban residents.

6. Public transport is useful in several major cities

Though the U.S. is known for its car culture, public transport is actually pretty good in many of the larger cities. Systems like the New York Subway or the San Francisco Bay Area’s BART make it easy to get around without a car. This can come as a shock if you thought that all Americans are glued to their car seats!

7. School experiences vary enormously by state and district

Depending on where you live in the U.S., your school experience can be drastically different. Some states have well-funded, highly innovative schools, while others struggle with fewer resources. This disparity can affect everything from the quality of education to the condition of school facilities.

8. Grocery prices differ dramatically by region

If you’ve ever traveled across the U.S., you might have noticed that the cost of groceries can vary a lot. In some areas, prices are relatively low, while in places like Hawaii or Alaska, you might be shocked at how much more you have to pay for the same items.

9. Winters aren’t warm everywhere

While places like California and Florida enjoy mild winters, other parts of the country experience very cold weather. States like Minnesota and Alaska face harsh winters with plenty of snow and ice, making it a completely different experience from the sunnier regions.

10. Houses aren’t huge in every part of the country

Contrary to what you might see on some TV shows, not all American houses are sprawling mansions. In densely populated cities or in economically harder-hit areas, houses tend to be much smaller and more modest.

11. Tipping customs can vary by situation

Tipping is a well-known practice in the U.S., but the expected amounts can vary. While it’s typical to tip around 15-20% in restaurants, other services might expect different amounts. Knowing when and how much to tip can be a bit of a learning curve for anyone not familiar with the customs.

12. Everyday life in New York looks nothing like everyday life in rural Texas

Imagine the bustling streets of New York City and then picture the wide-open spaces of rural Texas. Life in these two places is worlds apart in terms of pace, space, and lifestyle. This diversity is part of what makes the U.S. such an interesting place to explore or live in.
