5 Things Brits Do When They See Someone They Know in Public but Don’t Want to Talk to Them

Save to Find It Later!

Ever noticed how some of us get a bit awkward when we bump into someone we know in public but aren’t in the mood to chat? Well, it turns out there are a few classic moves us Brits pull off to smoothly escape these little social predicaments. From pretending to be glued to our phones to suddenly finding the nearest shop window fascinating, we’ve all been there. Let’s have a laugh and explore these all-too-familiar scenarios!

1. Suddenly become extremely interested in their phone

Imagine walking down the street, spotting someone in the distance, and realising you’re just not up for a chat. What do you do? You whip out your phone and dive into it. Scrolling through old texts, pretending to read an important email, or even staring at the blank screen – whatever it takes to look busy! It’s the perfect shield, offering a polite way to avoid eye contact and giving off the “I’m super busy” vibe without having to say a word.

2. Cross the road before being spotted

This one’s about timing. You see them, but they haven’t seen you yet. Quick decision – time to cross the street! It’s a smooth move that says “I’m headed somewhere else” without actually having to explain yourself. Plus, it’s a great way to dodge that inevitable stop-and-chat that you’re just not feeling today. Sometimes, going the extra mile (or just across the street) is totally worth it.

3. Pretend to look at something in a shop window

Shop windows can be real lifesavers. Here you are, walking down the High Street, and you suddenly find the most fascinating pair of socks or a toaster that captures your full attention. Of course, you’re not really interested in them, but they offer a perfect excuse to pause and let the other person pass by unnoticed. It’s casual, it’s clever, and it keeps things nice and awkward-free.

4. Walk down an aisle they don’t actually need in the supermarket

Supermarkets are maze-like, with plenty of escape routes. Spot someone you know and not feeling chatty? Take a sudden detour into another aisle. Whether it’s the baby products section and you don’t have a baby, or the pet food aisle and you don’t have a pet, it doesn’t matter. It’s all about finding that quick escape route, and hey, maybe you’ll even discover something new you actually need!

5. Look in the opposite direction at exactly the right moment

Sometimes, all it takes is a well-timed turn of the head. Spot someone you’d rather not chat with right now? Just look away at the exact moment they might see you. Maybe you suddenly find the distant architecture very interesting, or perhaps there’s a bird up in the sky that needs your immediate attention. It’s simple, subtle, and saves you from a conversation you’re not in the mood for.
