The Antelope Canyon X Experience

We were thrilled about our upcoming visit to Antelope Canyon and we made sure to book our tickets in advance. However, we got a bit mixed up with the different time zones and realized we would be running late coming from Upper Antelope Canyon. We quickly made a call to the tour company and explained the situation. They were extremely understanding and kindly rescheduled us for the next available tour. At the time we were a bit worried about missing out on the tour but we didn’t! So we liked that the staff was so kind and helpful.

When we arrived in the middle of August, we were greeted by the arranging and kind staff at Antelope Canyon X. They provided us with water and offered assistance in taking pictures. One of the guides was really into it and showed us the best settings to use on my iPhone to capture the vibrant colors of the canyon. I (Marie) was taking photos of everything not really knowing that settings could make such a big difference. After I switched my settings according to the guide’s suggestion, I saw how much of a difference it made in the final photos. The colors were definitely more vibrant!

Insider Tip: During the tour, we learned an insider tip for better photos. We discovered that tossing sand in the air could create a cool effect as it interacted with the beams of light coming from the crevices. If you want to spice up your photos, we recommend asking your guide for help. We saw the guides doing it for other people and it’s actually quite helpful!

While there are specific photography tours available at Antelope Canyon X, they are double the price and length. However, we think that you don’t need a photography tour unless you really want to get THE shot. The regular tour group is small, and from other groups’ comments, we heard that people generally take turns to ensure not getting t in each other’s photos.

Overall, the Antelope Canyon X is one to remember! We highly recommend visiting Antelope Canyon X for a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Antelope Canyon X difficulty

When it comes to difficulty, Antelope Canyon X offers a more accessible experience compared to Lower Antelope Canyon, which we found to be a bit harder. If you have a fear of heights like I do, the many metal stairs in Lower Antelope Canyon can be a bit scary. It took some time for me to navigate the steps, and I ended up at the back of the group. However, Upper Antelope Canyon didn’t pose any scary moments and was easier to explore.

As for Antelope Canyon X, it is relatively easy to access but does require navigating either stairs or a dirt path. The first section is a steep hill that goes down but it also provides benches along the way, allowing you to rest during the descent and ascent on your way back. There are also metal boards in place to prevent slipping. We would still recommend wearing sneakers or walking shoes for better grip and stability during the tour.

Overall, while there are some stairs and a dirt path involved in Antelope Canyon X, it is manageable for most visitors. The presence of benches and metal boards helps ensure a safer and more comfortable experience. Just take your time, use the provided resting areas, and wear appropriate footwear for added stability. The front office is where you can purchase tickets, although we highly recommend booking in advance to secure your spot as Antelope Canyon X is becoming increasingly popular. From the office, there is a short drive to the canyon itself. You have the option to take a shuttle to the mouth of Canyon X, which is a 4WD vehicle. Alternatively, you can drive your own car, but you’ll need to follow the shuttle. We suggest taking the shuttle for a more relaxed experience. If you do decide to drive yourself, it’s just a short walk from the second parking area to Canyon X, approximately 100 meters away.

Next, you’ll make your way down into the canyon. The entrance involves descending a steep hill that is around 30 or 40 meters long. Don’t worry, there are benches along the way, allowing you to take a break or proceed at a slower pace both while descending and ascending. You can choose between the railroad tie stairs or a dirt path, which has metal traction boards for stability and to prevent slipping.

As you reach the bottom of the canyon, you’ll come to a T section where your guide will meet you. The guide will provide you with an introduction to Canyon X, share important rules, and explain the program for the tour. On the left side, you’ll notice a lot of water pouring into the canyon, a unique sight that distinguishes Canyon X from the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons.

1. Watch out for time zones

When visiting Antelope Canyon X, it’s important to be aware of the time zones in the area. Since the canyon is located near the Arizona border, it does not follow daylight savings time. Make sure to check the time clarity on your purchased ticket to avoid any confusion. We learned this the hard way when our phones got confused at the border. After finishing the first canyon tour, we realized we were going to be late for the second one. We had to call and ask them to book us on the next available tour, luckily it wasn’t sold out.

2. Book in advance

As always, we recommend booking your Antelope Canyon X tour in advance. While it’s usually possible to book last minute at Canyon X, there’s a chance you might be unlucky, especially since it’s becoming more popular. To have the best choice of tour times, we suggest booking at least a month in advance.

3. Restrooms

Keep in mind that there are no restrooms available during the tour itself. However, you can find restrooms at the front office before starting the tour. It’s a good idea to use the facilities before heading into the canyon.

4. Bring water

Antelope Canyon X can get hot, even when there’s no direct sunlight. The dry climate and dry air, particularly in August when we visited, can make you feel thirsty. Remember to bring water with you to stay hydrated throughout the tour.

5. Prepare for the dirt

Be prepared for dirt during your Antelope Canyon X experience. The shuttles kick up a lot of dust, and you’ll find dirt on your car, shoes, and even in your nostrils, as we found out. It’s a good idea to bring wet wipes or tissues to clean up afterward.

6. Bring walking shoes

Walking in Antelope Canyon X involves navigating through dirt, sand, and small rocks. There are metal traction boards in certain areas to provide stability. It’s best to wear comfortable walking shoes that support your ankles and feet to avoid any injuries. We don’t recommend sandals, as they can easily lead to toe injuries.

7. Navajo Permit Fee in cash

For all canyons, including Antelope Canyon X, there is an additional fee known as the Navajo Permit Fee. It amounts to $8 per person and must be paid in cash when you arrive. Be sure to have the exact amount ready to expedite the entry process.

During the summer months, temperatures can be hot, so we recommend to wear lightweight and breathable clothing. For example, we wore shorts and t-shirts, to stay cool and comfortable.

Regardless of the season, we highly recommend wearing sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

4. Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

Due to the sandy environment, there will be a lot of sand flying around in Antelope Canyon X. It’s advisable to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Light-colored clothing may show less sand and dust, but keep in mind that the sand can still cling to your clothes. Consider wearing darker colors or patterns that can help conceal any sand particles. In our case, we wore clothes that we didn’t mind getting dirty!

If you’re already in Page, it’s a quick 14-minute drive to reach Antelope Canyon X. You can simply follow the directions and drive southeast on Highway 98 to arrive at the canyon. The scenic drive will take you through the beautiful desert landscapes of Arizona.

If you’re coming from Las Vegas, it’s approximately 284 miles and around a 4-hour drive to reach Antelope Canyon X. From Sedona, the drive is less than 3 hours, covering a distance of 167 miles. And if you’re starting your journey from the Grand Canyon, it will take you about 2 and a half hours to drive the 141-mile distance.

Where do you fly into for Antelope Canyon?

When planning a trip to Antelope Canyon, you have a couple of options for airports to fly into. Here’s some information to help you decide:

• Page Municipal Airport: If you prefer flying directly to the vicinity of Antelope Canyon, Page Municipal Airport (PGA) is the closest airport. It’s just a 12-minute drive from the airport to the canyon. You can check for flights operated by Contour Airlines, which offers services to and from Page. This small airport is a convenient choice if you’re looking for a shorter travel time and a more localized experience.
• Other Nearby Airports: If you’re looking for more flight options or are planning an international trip, the best airport to fly into is Las Vegas Airport (LAS). While it’s not as close as Page Municipal Airport, it’s a major international airport with a wide range of flights.
