Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to live in and visit some amazing places that truly shine in the fall, and I can honestly say there’s no better time to explore them. Whether it’s the small-town charm of North Idaho, the spooky vibes of a historic town, or the natural beauty of a national park, these spots have something special to offer when autumn rolls around.
I’ve put together this list of fall bucket list destinations based on my own experiences and love for the season. Each place has its own unique way of celebrating fall, from leaf-peeping and hiking to festivals and haunted tours. I’ve lived in some of these places and visited others, and I can vouch for them being perfect for a fall getaway.

1. Stowe, Vermont
Stowe, Vermont, is like a real-life postcard in the fall. The town is surrounded by beautiful mountains that turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow as the leaves change. One of the best ways to see the colors is by driving along the scenic Route 108, also known as Smugglers’ Notch.
If you’re up for a hike, try the Stowe Pinnacle Trail for amazing views at the top. After a day of exploring, stop by Cold Hollow Cider Mill for some fresh apple cider and homemade donuts. If you’re into history, you can visit the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum in downtown Stowe. It’s a great place to soak up the fall vibes.
