Cheesy Pizza Puff Pastry Appetizers

Save to Find It Later!

If you’re ever scrambling to throw together a quick appetizer but still want it to look like you tried—this one’s for you. These cheesy pizza puff pastry twists come together in minutes, but they’ve got serious snack appeal. You get buttery, flaky pastry with a gooey cheese center and a little spicy kick from the jalapeños. They’re basically like bite-sized pizza breadsticks, but with that puff pastry magic that makes everything feel a bit fancier than it really is.

I like making these when we have friends over or when I just need something snacky to go with a movie night. They bake up golden, smell incredible, and you can eat them warm or at room temp. Honestly, they’re the kind of thing that disappears from the table in no time.

A few tips to make them just right:

  • Let your puff pastry thaw just enough so you can work with it, but keep it cold. That’s how you get the best rise and crisp.
  • Spread the tomato paste thin—too much and it’ll get soggy or ooze out while baking.
  • Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice the pastry cleanly into strips.
  • Twist each strip tightly and press the ends down slightly on your baking sheet so they don’t unravel in the oven.
  • Don’t skip brushing the tops with tomato paste—it helps with color and flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (about 250g / 9 oz)
  • 2–3 tbsp tomato paste (30–45g)
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (like mozzarella or cheddar, about 50g)
  • Sliced jalapeños, to taste (fresh or jarred)

Alternative ingredients

You can use marinara or pizza sauce instead of tomato paste, just go light so it doesn’t make the pastry soggy.
Any melty cheese works—cheddar, mozzarella, or even a cheese mix if you’ve got one on hand.
If jalapeños aren’t your thing, you can swap them for black olives, chopped pepperoni, or even sun-dried tomatoes.

Step 1: Prep the pastry

Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Cut the puff pastry sheet in half lengthwise to create two equal rectangles.

Step 2: Add the filling

Spread a thin layer of tomato paste on the first half of the pastry. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top, then scatter on your sliced jalapeños.

Step 3: Layer

Place the second half of the puff pastry on top to sandwich the filling. Press down lightly.

Step 4: Slice and twist

Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the layered pastry into strips about 2cm wide. Take each strip and gently twist it, then place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush a bit of tomato paste over to get that extra grilled effect.

Step 5: Bake

Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the twists are golden and puffed. Let them cool for a couple of minutes before serving.

How to conserve the recipe

These are best eaten fresh, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container at room temp for up to a day. To bring them back to life, pop them in a 180°C (350°F) oven for 5–8 minutes until crisp again. I don’t recommend microwaving—they’ll go soggy. You can freeze the unbaked, twisted pastry strips on a tray, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen at the same temp, adding 3–5 extra minutes.

Different ways to serve the dish

These are perfect as appetizers for game day, casual parties, or even a last-minute dinner side. You can serve them on their own or with a little bowl of marinara or ranch for dipping. They also make a great kid-friendly snack—just leave out the jalapeños if spice isn’t their thing. I’ve packed them in lunchboxes too—they hold up surprisingly well.

Want to make a meal out of them? Pair with a simple salad or a bowl of soup. You can also prep a bunch with different fillings (like pesto and cheese, or ham and mustard) and make a twist bar for guests. They’re the kind of snack that fits into pretty much any situation.
