How To Make DIY Christmas Gnomes For Your Home Decor

Save to Find It Later!

Are you looking for a fun and easy Christmas craft project? Making DIY Christmas gnomes is a perfect choice! These cute little gnomes are not only simple to make, but they also add a lot of charm to your holiday decorations. Plus, it’s a great activity to do with kids or friends, making it a fun way to spend time together.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to create your own Christmas gnomes using basic materials like socks, rice, felt, and a few other easy-to-find items. You can customize them however you like! Add a fluffy beard, a cute nose, and a festive hat, and you’ll have a delightful gnome ready to bring some holiday cheer to your home. You can even make some with legs and some without for a fun variety.

These gnomes are perfect for decorating your home, giving as gifts, or even using as part of your holiday table centerpiece. I have loved making those. I actually named my two Gus and Gustav!

So, gather your materials, get your glue gun ready, and letโ€™s start making some DIY Christmas gnomes. By the end of this project, youโ€™ll have a collection of cute gnomes that add a personal and festive touch to your holiday season.

What You Need

  • Small elastic
  • Brown felt
  • A piece of fluffy rug (for the beard), you can buy a cheap rug online and cut it later
  • One 2cm pearl
  • Two socks
  • A glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Rice

What to Do

Step 1
Put one sock into another to double up the body. This will make the gnome sturdy and give it a nice weight. Doubling up the socks helps ensure the rice doesnโ€™t spill out.

Step 2
Add rice into the sock. Add enough to reach the size you want for your gnomeโ€™s body. You can make it as small or big as you like, just ensure the base is stable.

Step 3
Tie the socks with an elastic to secure the rice inside. Then, tie a double knot with the sock ends on top. Cut off any excess sock material so it looks neat and tidy.

Step 4
Glue the pearl in the middle of the sock to serve as the gnomeโ€™s nose. Make sure it’s securely attached by holding it in place until the glue sets.

If you don’t have any pearls, you can make the nose out of the sock and rice. Simply create a sort of bubble and tie it with the elastic.

Step 5
Cut the rug into a triangle shape to create the beard. The triangle should be big enough to cover the front of the sock below the nose.

Step 6
Glue the beard to the sock, positioning it right under the nose. Press firmly to ensure it sticks well, giving your gnome a fluffy, festive beard.

Step 7
Cut a half circle from the brown felt to make the hat. Roll it into a cone shape and glue the edges together to secure it. You can leave the hat pointy or roll the tip to give it a different look.

Step 8
Glue the hat to the gnome, ensuring it borders the nose and beard. Adjust the hat to make sure it sits snugly and looks just right.

Step 9 (Optional)
If you want to add legs, cut 4 strips from the socks and glue them 2 by 2 to make them thicker. Roll the ends to create feet and glue them to the body from underneath. Legs can add a whimsical touch to your gnome.

I like to make some gnomes with legs and some without to vary the decor. This gives a nice mix to your Christmas decorations. Enjoy making these adorable DIY Christmas gnomes and spread the holiday cheer!
