Is Oklahoma in the South? This seems to be a question that no-one in the USA can settle. Having lived abroad all over the world together and having met many Americans, we decided to tackle this question of is Oklahoma southern by using our experience of different cultures and meeting many people from different horizons.

We have lived in the USA (Idaho) and have travelled across the country many times. We traveled from Arizona to Utah, visited vintage Route 66 hotels, and we also road-tripped across the USA from Nashville, in the South to the California and Hawaii in the West. Having crossed the USA several times and visited 18 US states total, we’ve got to know different American accents, different cultures and traditions in different states. 

With that experience and passion for the USA, and after answering other questions like whether Canada is in America or not, we’ve decided to answer the question as to whether Oklahoma is a southern state. It’s probably not an easy task, but here’s our two cents based on our experience and what our friends from Oklahoma have told us.

Is Oklahoma in the South?

Yes, Oklahoma is generally considered as part of the South.

Oklahoma’s history: Is Oklahoma the south according to history?

Oklahoma is a stunning state with lots of history that can sometimes confuse whether or not it is part of the southern belt of the USA. For example, in 1825, it was decided that Oklahoma was part of Indian Territory.

We know that Oklahoma was not one of the 11 Confederate States during the American Civil War. The 11 confederate States were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. If you’re wondering what states are considered the south, these are it. However, it shares a similar position to those states in terms of its history. 

As Eric and I both studied law, this is quite a segment of history that is interesting for us. The enactment of Jim Crow Laws, which made segregation legal, reflects a similarity with the southern states. Senate Bill No. 1, passed in Oklahoma, legalized Jim Crow Laws, thereby establishing a legal framework for segregation in the state. The 19th Century and the 20th Century adopted segregational laws against African Americans. For example, African Americans were not allowed to vote. This alignment with the policies of the southern states during that time demonstrates a historical connection between Oklahoma and the South.

Oklahoma’s food: is Oklahoma considered the south or midwest based on food?

The creation of a state meal by Oklahoma’s 41st legislature in 1988 further highlights the state’s connection to southern culture. The designated state meal, which consists of multiple meats, vegetables, breads, and desserts, reflects a distinctly southern culinary tradition. 

With dishes such as chicken fried steak, barbecued pork burgers, fried okra, squash, cornbread, grits, black-eyed peas, and pecan pie, the meal encompasses many elements of southern cuisine. 

The inclusion of fried ingredients, pecan pie, and corn further emphasizes the southern culinary influence in Oklahoma. I (Marie) lived in Bonners Ferry Idaho in the north of the country and I can assure you that this meal is definitely southern and not northern! With 2,700 calories, this state meal serves as a testament to the state’s affinity for southern food traditions.

Oklahoma’s Tea

One aspect of Oklahoma’s culinary culture that aligns with the South is the preference for sweet tea. Many locals argue that when you order tea in Oklahoma, it is most likely to be sweet tea. Sweet tea is considered a hallmark of southern cuisine, known for its refreshing and sweet taste. The prevalence of sweet tea in Oklahoma further supports the argument that the state shares cultural elements with the South.

Census Bureau’s position: what region is Oklahoma in according to the Census Bureau?

The United States Census Bureau designates Oklahoma as part of the Southern Region. This official classification recognizes Oklahoma’s geographical location and its historical and cultural ties to the South. The Census Bureau’s categorization provides strong evidence supporting Oklahoma’s affiliation with the southern states.

Oklahoma Accent

As travelers and since we’ve lived abroad in very different countries, we can definitely tell where people are from often just by their accent. The Oklahoma accent has roots in Appalachia, which is a variation of the Southern Accent. Linguistic studies have identified similarities between the accents of Oklahoma and those found in southern regions. The presence of this accent further highlights the cultural connections between Oklahoma and the South, emphasizing the state’s southern heritage.

Based on this categorization, Oklahoma falls outside the Southeast region.

Locals in Oklahoma generally concur with the Census Bureau’s classification. The prevailing understanding is that Oklahoma is not part of the Southeast. While it is grouped with other southern states in this division, the specific designation indicates that Oklahoma is not explicitly considered part of the Southwest region according to the bureau’s classification.

Geographical counter-argument 

A geographical counter-argument can be made against Oklahoma’s classification as part of the Southwest based on its lack of Spanish place names. The Southwest region is known for its historical ties to Mexico and its Hispanic influence, which is reflected in many of the region’s place names. However, Oklahoma does not have a significant presence of Spanish place names, suggesting a divergence from the Southwest’s cultural and historical heritage.

In terms of geography, Oklahoma is located more centrally within the United States rather than being situated in the southwestern corner. Where is Oklahoma City, Oklahoma?

Oklahoma City is located in the centre of Oklahoma State. It is the capital of the state and is famous for its cowboy culture! Like the Bluebird Cafe is a must see in Nashville, Oklahoma City is also a must stop if you’ve got time!

It seems that people from the “South” consider Oklahoma to be part of the Midwest, while those from the Midwest consider Oklahoma to be part of the South.
