Visiting Honolulu is a dream for many, with its beautiful beaches, sunny weather, and friendly locals. i have to say I was over the moon when I first visited Honolulu! I was also quite happy to finally arrive as it’s not the closest island to get to when you’re coming from Europe!

However, to make the most out of your trip, there are some common mistakes you’ll want to avoid.

From respecting local traditions to exploring beyond the usual tourist spots, weโ€™ll cover 10 key points that will help you enjoy your holiday even more. Letโ€™s get started so you can have a smooth and enjoyable visit to this Hawaiian paradise.

1. Only sticking to Waikiki Beach and missing other parts of Oahu

Waikiki Beach is famous and fun, but Oahu has so much more to offer. If you stick only to Waikiki, you’ll miss out on stunning spots like the serene beaches of Kailua, the breathtaking views from the hiking trails at Koko Head, and the unique historical sites throughout the island.

Make sure to rent a car or join a local tour to explore these amazing locations. You’ll discover that each part of Oahu has its own charm and character.

2. Not booking Pearl Harbor tickets in advance

Pearl Harbor is a must-visit, but it’s super popular. If you don’t book your tickets ahead of time, you might miss out because it sells out fast, especially during peak tourist seasons. Booking early means youโ€™ll definitely get to experience this historic site without the stress of trying to get last-minute tickets.

3. Ignoring local eateries and only eating at tourist restaurants

Itโ€™s easy to just eat at the places you see right off the beach, but you’re missing out on some amazing local food. Places like Helenaโ€™s Hawaiian Food or Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck offer some authentic, delicious options that you won’t find in the tourist spots. These eateries give you a taste of real Hawaiian culture and hospitality.

4. Not considering traffic when planning outings around the island

Traffic in Honolulu can get pretty heavy, especially during rush hours. Not planning can turn what should be a quick trip into a long drive. Check traffic reports before heading out and try to avoid peak times. Maybe even enjoy some local spots near your accommodation until the traffic eases.

5. Failing to pack for both beach and hiking activities

Hawaiiโ€™s weather can be sunny one minute and rainy the next, especially in more tropical areas. Make sure to bring a variety of clothing options, including gear for hiking and cooler evenings. Good shoes are a must if you plan to explore trails or rocky beaches.

6. Overlooking the cultural significance of historical sites like Iolani Palace

Iolani Palace isnโ€™t just a pretty building; it’s a significant part of Hawaiiโ€™s history and the only royal palace in the United States. Take the time to join a guided tour to learn about the rich history of the Hawaiian monarchy and the island’s colonization and eventual statehood.

7. Not checking local events and festivals during your visit

Hawaii is home to many unique events and festivals, which are great ways to see the culture alive and in action. From the King Kamehameha Floral Parade to the Aloha Festivals, thereโ€™s always something happening. Take a look at local calendars before your trip and try to catch an event.

8. Assuming all beaches have lifeguards on duty

This is a safety issue. Many beaches in Hawaii do not have lifeguards. Always check for signs about lifeguards and heed any posted warnings about swimming conditions. Safety should always come first.

9. Disrespecting local customs or ignoring โ€œkapuโ€ (restricted) areas

โ€œKapuโ€ can mean sacred or restricted. There are places in Hawaii that are not open to visitors out of respect for local traditions and culture. Pay attention to signs and follow the rules. Showing respect will also earn you respect in return from the locals.

10. Skipping a visit to the North Shore for its beaches and scenery

The North Shore is legendary, especially if you love surfing or just want to watch the surfers in action. Itโ€™s also less crowded than Waikiki, offering a more relaxed atmosphere and some of the best food trucks on the island. Donโ€™t miss it; a trip to the North Shore can be the highlight of your visit.
