Planning a trip to Rome? Great choice! I can only recommend the city. The vibe, the history, the beauty, everything in Rome makes it worth a visit! The city is full of history, culture, and stunning architecture.

However, to make the most out of your visit, there are some common pitfalls you’ll want to avoid. From what to wear to managing your sightseeing schedule, here’s a list of 15 mistakes to dodge, ensuring your trip is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

1. Wearing Inappropriate Clothing

When visiting Rome, it’s important to dress appropriately, especially when entering churches and religious sites. Many of these places require modest attire, so wearing shorts and sleeveless tops might restrict your access.

It’s not just about respect; it’s also a requirement. Pack clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, or carry a scarf to wrap around you when needed. This way, you wonโ€™t miss out on seeing incredible places like St. Peter’s Basilica just because of what you’re wearing.

2. Underestimating Walking Distances

Rome’s attractions may look close on a map, but the city is vast and filled with winding streets. Expect a lot of walking.

To stay comfortable, wear sturdy shoes that can handle cobblestones and hours of walking. This simple preparation will prevent sore feet and ensure you can explore all day without discomfort.

3. Skipping the Skip-the-Line Tickets

Rome is a popular destination, leading to long lines at major attractions like the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums. To save time, purchase skip-the-line tickets before your visit. This might cost a bit more, but the time you save and the frustration you avoid are more than worth the extra expense.

4. Eating Near Major Tourist Sites

Restaurants located close to major tourist spots generally charge more and offer less authentic culinary experiences. Take a short walk away from the landmarks to find where locals eat. Not only will the food be better and more authentic, but it’ll also be cheaper.

5. Not Staying Hydrated

Rome can be hot and very dry, especially in the summer months. Carry a water bottle with you to stay hydrated throughout the day. You can refill your bottle at the many public drinking fountains scattered around the city. Staying hydrated will keep your energy levels up as you explore.

6. Ignoring Pickpocket Warnings

Like many busy tourist destinations, Rome has its share of pickpockets, particularly in crowded areas and on public transport. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of your belongings. Consider using a money belt or a cross-body bag that zips shut to keep your possessions safe.

7. Visiting Only Major Attractions

While the Colosseum and Vatican are must-sees, Rome has much more to offer. Venture out to lesser-known sites and neighborhoods for a more unique and personal experience. Districts like Trastevere or the Jewish Ghetto offer charming streets, great food, and fewer crowds.

8. Relying Solely on Taxis

Taxis in Rome can be expensive and unnecessary. The city’s public transport system is extensive and can get you most places efficiently. Walking is also a fantastic way to see the city. You’ll save money and stumble upon hidden gems that you would miss otherwise.

9. Skipping the Siesta

Many local shops and some restaurants close in the early afternoon for what is commonly known as ‘siesta’ time. Plan your schedule around this: visit indoor attractions or schedule a rest during these hours. This is a perfect time to enjoy a leisurely lunch or a break back at your hotel.

10. Not Learning Basic Italian Phrases

While many Italians speak English, particularly in Rome, learning a few basic Italian phrases can greatly enhance your interaction with locals. Simple phrases like “Buongiorno” (Good morning), “Grazie” (Thank you), and “Quanto costa?” (How much does it cost?) can go a long way in showing respect and making connections.

11. Overpacking

Dragging heavy luggage over cobblestone streets and up narrow staircases in hotels without elevators is no fun. Pack light to make your travel within the city easier and more enjoyable. Just bring the essentials and remember that you can always do laundry in the city if needed.

12. Disrespecting Local Customs

Itโ€™s important to respect the local culture and traditions, especially in a city as rich in history as Rome. This includes dressing appropriately, behaving respectfully in religious settings, and following any local advice or regulations. When in doubt, observe what locals do.

13. Underestimating the Heat

Summers in Rome can be scorching. Protect yourself against the sun with sunscreen, a hat, and lightweight, breathable clothing. Don’t let the heat take a toll on your health or your ability to enjoy your trip.

14. Forgetting to Validate Train Tickets

When using regional trains, remember to validate your ticket before you board. You’ll find small machines at the entrance to the platforms where you can stamp your ticket. Failure to do this can result in hefty fines.

15. Trying to See Everything

Rome has a lot to offer, but trying to pack every attraction into your visit is a recipe for stress. Choose a few must-see sites and spread them out over your days.

Allow time for spontaneous discoveries and relaxing moments. After all, sometimes the best memories come from the unexpected experiences you find along the way.
