Going for a visit at O Porto do Gatos, Porto’s cat café, is one of the best thing to do as a couple when visiting Porto. We actually would consider this cat café, one of the best in Europe, making it a fun Portuguese landmark to visit!

Romantic cat café

Eric knows that the way to my heart is by surrounding me with cute balls of furs! I think that going to a cat cafe is super cute and romantic. We have actually visited a couple cat cafés on our trips, including Dublin’s cat cafe and Java Whiskers, one of the best London cat cafes. The atmosphere at cat cafes is relaxing and playing with the cats is super fun. Just like you would bring your partner to a café for breakfast, bringing them to a cat café is a nice upgrade! It’s the breakfast date 2.0 if you ask me! 

Budget-friendly visit

Cat cafes are usually free to enter and that’s the case for O Porto dos Gatos. The only thing you’ll have to pay for is drinks, treats or both which all together shouldn’t be more than €10-€15 for two people. You can stay at the café as long as you want and there is no fee to play and pet the cats.

Ethical

This cat cafe Porto offers does not force the cats to do anything to entertain you. The cats are up for adoption and live here until they find their forever family. There is no guarantee that the cats will come up to you, let you pet them or play with you. This is because the cafe respect their wellbeing as living breathing beings. We, of course, fully support that approach!

The experience that this Cat Cafe Porto offers

This cat cafe Porto offers, features two large rooms and an inner outdoor courtyard. When entering O Porto dos Gatos, you’ll find yourself in a large room subtly decorated in a cat theme and features the cafe part of the establishment. The room is decorated and furnished in a farmhouse style which makes it feel very homie and welcoming. On the left wall, you’ll find a beautiful mural representing a cat face.

There are no cats allowed in this room and the room is separated from the other two by closed doors. Actually, you can even bring your dog with you in this part of the café!

In the back, on the left, you’ll find an indoor room dedicated to the cats. There they have lots of toys, little beds, and cat trees. There is a couple of tables and seats there where you can hang out with the cats. No food is allowed in this room.

And finally, in the back, you’ll find a large outdoor space, well maintained, with lots of tables and chairs. The space is covered by a light fence so cats don’t come in and out. This space feels like an outdoor backyard. This is the perfect place to have breakfast on a sunny day. Lots of cats hang out in this space. 

The cats

The cafe is the home of about a dozen of cats depending on when you visit and how many cats have been rescued. This means that the number of cats changes as the cats get adopted and find their new home. When we visited, there were about 10 cats, all of different colours.

At this cafe, you’ll find mostly grown up cats and no kittens. This is because when kittens are rescued, they need a lot of care and sometimes treatment. 

Things you can do at Porto’s cat cafe

There are toys available at the cafe that you can pick up and play with the cats with. You can also spend some time in the indoor room to pet the cats and give them all the snuggles they love. 

Adopting from O Porto dos Gatos

The cats at O Porto dos Gatos are up for adoption. Owners Joana and Fátima are passionate about rescuing and finding a good home to their cats. Before you can become their forever family, you will need to take them home for a few days to see if you are the perfect fit for your kitty. Of course, you can absolutely visit the cat cafe without wanting to adopt. 

The Vegetarian Cafe experience at this Porto Cat cafe

This cat café in Porto offers a wide range of vegan and vegetarian food and drinks. It is one of the partially vegan cafe Porto offers. To be honest, everything on O Porto dos Gatos menu sounded amazing to us when we visited and it was hard to pick especially seeing all the homemade food right in front of our eyes! O Porto dos Gatos comprises foods like homemade cakes and snacks, organic teas and juices, and more. 

This is a lovely place to go for breakfast before starting a long day exploring Porto but it is also amazing for brunch or a mid-afternoon snack. 

The cafe also organises art competition. If you have great artistic skills and want to paint cats, you can participate to the cafe’s event on their facebook page. Your piece might get chosen to be exhibited on the walls of the cafe. All sales of the art pieces goes towards the charity. 

Our experience at the O Porto dos Gatos cat cafe in Porto 

We had a blast visiting O Porto dos Gatos. Before arriving, we weren’t sure what to expect but the cafe did not disappoint. We decided to go first thing in the morning to avoid any potential crowds and that paid off. We were the only ones in the cafe for about one hour! We would recommend going right at the opening time in the morning. 

First, we really liked the ambiance of the café. It felt like we were just visiting some friends and was really cozy. We headed straight to the cafe to order our food. We had a piece of carrot cake and a brownie with homemade fresh orange juice. Everything was excellent. Prices were very reasonable too which made the experience even better.

While our food was getting prepared, we headed to the outdoor courtyard and started playing with the cats. They naturally came to us and started purring as we petted them. We played a bit with them and gave them lots of snuggles. Then we ate our food outside as it was a nice day. The cats weren’t roaming around us to get food which was nice. We also spent some time petting them in the indoor room. 

We had a really good time and spent about one hour on site. We felt very relaxed afterwards, and of course, well fed. 

If you are coming to Porto, we would definitely recommend heading to O Porto dos Gatos for breakfast. 

Practical information about O Porto dos Gatos

The café is located at Avenida Rodrigues de Freitas, nº 93-95 4300-096.  From the historical centre, it is a quick 15 minute walk.

This cat café Porto offers is opened from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 8pm, on Fridays from 2:30pm to 11:30 pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 8pm. It is closed on Sundays. 

There are a few things to do near O Porto dos Gatos such as visiting the City library and the Military Museum of Porto.
