This Spanish coastal town Is Still Under The Radar

I recently stumbled upon a hidden gem on the coast of Spain, and I can’t believe I hadn’t visited it sooner. Cadaquรฉs, a lesser-known but stunning coastal town, completely took me by surprise with its charming streets, beautiful beaches, and rich art scene.

Having traveled quite a bit through Spain, including Barcelona and the Costa Brava, I was surprised that Cadaquรฉs had escaped my radar until now. Let me share with you the experiences that made my visit unforgettable.

1. Cadaques is a coastal town of Spain

Situated in the northeastern part of Spain, in Catalonia, Cadaquรฉs is a picturesque town on the Mediterranean coast. This town is famously known for its whitewashed houses that sparkle under the sun, lending it an air of timeless charm.

Nestled in a bay in the middle of the Cap de Creus peninsula, Cadaquรฉs has captivated artists and travelers alike with its stunning natural beauty and tranquil seas.

2. How I had never heard of it

Despite having explored Spain extensively, visiting well-known cities and coastal regions like Barcelona and Costa Brava, Cadaquรฉs had never come up on my travel radar.

This town’s serene and somewhat isolated location might be why it’s not as talked about as other tourist spots. However, this obscurity is what preserves its unique beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a delightful discovery for any traveler.

3. Visit Salvador Dalรญ’s House Museum

One of the highlights of Cadaquรฉs is the Salvador Dalรญ House-Museum in Portlligat, a small village just a stone’s throw from the town.

To visit Dalรญ’s actual house, you need to book at least a week in advance, though you can still enjoy the beautifully surreal gardens on the day of your visit. The house itself offers a peek into Dalรญโ€™s eccentric life and creative genius, making it a must-visit for art lovers.

4. Explore the Cap de Creus Natural Park

The Cap de Creus Natural Park offers rugged landscapes and spectacular views of the coast. This park is ideal for nature lovers looking to hike or simply enjoy the natural scenery of rocky cliffs and secluded coves. The untouched beauty of this area makes it perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat in nature.

5. Walk around the Old Town and its narrow streets

Strolling through the Old Town of Cadaquรฉs is like walking into a postcard. With its narrow, cobblestone streets, I recommend wearing flat, comfortable shoes.

Make sure to wander through the Painters Street, which is particularly stunning. Built on a cliff, the Old Town’s charm is accentuated by its historic architecture and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.

6. Relax at the Platja Gran beach

Platja Gran is the main beach of Cadaquรฉs and offers stunning views of the town and the sea. The beach area is perfect for a relaxing day where you can sunbathe, swim, and even enjoy a drink at one of the beachside restaurants. The scenic backdrop and the soothing sounds of waves create a perfect atmosphere to unwind.

7. Visit the Church of Santa Maria

Perched high above the town, the Church of Santa Maria offers an incredible view of Cadaquรฉs and the surrounding sea. The church itself is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture with a richly decorated interior. A visit here is uplifting, not just spiritually but also visually.

8. Take a boat tour along the coast

To truly appreciate the beauty of Cadaquรฉs and its rugged coastline, take a boat tour. These tours provide a different perspective, allowing you to see the hidden coves and inlets that are not accessible by land. The crystal-clear waters and rocky shores seen from the sea are absolutely mesmerizing.

9. Enjoy local seafood at a seaside restaurant

Cadaquรฉs offers some of the freshest and most delicious seafood in Catalonia. Dine at any seaside restaurant to taste local specialties prepared with the day’s catch. From savory paellas to grilled fish, the food is as delightful as the sea views.

10. Visit the Cadaquรฉs Museum

The Cadaquรฉs Museum, although small, offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s history and cultural heritage. It includes works by local artists, including some by Salvador Dalรญ, showcasing the town’s artistic legacy. This museum is a quiet spot to learn more about the place and its influence on many renowned artists.

11. Hike to the Faro de Cala Nans lighthouse

For an active day out, hike to the Faro de Cala Nans lighthouse. The trail offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the rugged coastline. Reaching the lighthouse is rewarding, with sweeping vistas that make the walk worthwhile.

12. Explore the local art galleries

Cadaquรฉs has a vibrant art scene, influenced no doubt by its association with Salvador Dalรญ. The local art galleries display a mix of contemporary and historical works, reflecting the artistic diversity of the region.

Browsing these galleries, you can see why Cadaquรฉs has been a muse for many artists throughout history.
