10 Summer Mistakes Many Brits Still Make Every Year

Save to Find It Later!

Summer time is here, and we love enjoying the long days and warm nights. But sometimes, our excitement can lead to a few common slip-ups that can easily spoil our fun. Here’s a list of 10 typical summer health mistakes a lot of us Brits still make. It’s all about learning and improving, so don’t worry—we’ve all been there. Stick with me, and let’s run through these summer no-nos, so you can have the best, and safest, summer possible!

1. Not Drinking Enough Water

During summer, staying hydrated is super important. With the sun blazing down more intensely, our bodies lose water faster through sweat. This can lead to dehydration if we don’t drink enough water. It’s not just about quenching thirst; sufficient water intake helps regulate body temperature and prevents heat-related illnesses. So, always carry a water bottle, especially when you’re out and about enjoying the sunshine.

2. Forgetting to Reapply Sunscreen

Many of us do remember to slap on some sunscreen before stepping out. However, reapplying it is where we often fall short. Sunscreen isn’t a one-and-done deal. It wears off, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Make sure to reapply it every two hours, and immediately after you’ve been in the water, to keep your skin protected from harmful UV rays.

3. Spending Too Long in the Midday Sun

The sun is strongest between 11 AM and 3 PM. Spending too much time outdoors during these hours can increase your risk of sunburn and heatstroke. If you can, try to schedule your outdoor activities outside these peak sun hours. If you must be out, seek shade regularly, wear a hat and loose, breathable clothing.

4. Ignoring Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is not something to take lightly—it can quickly turn into heatstroke, which is a lot more serious. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale, and clammy skin, a fast, weak pulse, nausea, or vomiting. If you notice these symptoms in yourself or someone else, move to a cooler place, drink water, and rest immediately.

5. Leaving Food Out During Picnics

We all love a good picnic, but leaving food out in the heat can turn it into a breeding ground for bacteria. Food should not sit out for more than two hours, or one hour if it’s above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep perishable foods in coolers and only take them out when you’re ready to eat to avoid any tummy troubles.

6. Not Checking for Ticks After Countryside Walks

Walking through the lush countryside is refreshing, but it comes with the risk of tick bites. Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme disease. Always check your clothes and skin for ticks after a walk in the countryside. It’s a simple step that shouldn’t be overlooked.

7. Swimming Where It Isn’t Safe

Summer isn’t complete without a dip in the water, but make sure it’s a safe spot. Avoid swimming in areas without lifeguards or where swimming isn’t recommended. Currents can be stronger than you think, and what looks safe might not be.

8. Underestimating UV Levels on Cloudy Days

It’s a common myth that cloudy days mean no sun danger. But, UV rays can penetrate through clouds and still cause sunburn. Whether it’s sunny or cloudy, using sunscreen is a must.

9. Drinking Too Much Alcohol in Hot Weather

While enjoying a cold beer on a hot day is tempting, alcohol can dehydrate you. Mix it up with plenty of water or other non-alcoholic drinks to keep yourself hydrated and cool, especially when the sun is out.

10. Forgetting Hay Fever Medication

Hay fever can catch you off-guard during the summer months. If you have allergies, it’s smart to keep your medication handy. Don’t let hay fever slow you down; by managing your symptoms, you can enjoy your summer much more comfortably.
