10 Things Brits Find More Stressful About Living in America

Save to Find It Later!

Moving from Britain to America can be quite the shake-up. With new sights and sounds, life in the States is a big change from what many Brits are used to. Here are 10 things that Brits often find stressful when they start living in America. From the nitty-gritty of paperwork to the vast landscapes that make up this diverse country, let’s explore what might catch you off guard.

1. Filing Annual Taxes

Filing taxes in the US can really make you miss the UK! Unlike the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) system back home, where the tax is mostly handled by employers, in the US it’s up to you to figure out what you owe. You need to keep track of your expenses, understand different deductions, and often, file a tax return every year. This can be a real headache, especially if you’re not used to dealing with all this paperwork.

2. Healthcare Paperwork

Handling healthcare paperwork in America is a whole different ball game. In the UK, thanks to the NHS, we don’t see much of this. In the US, every doctor’s visit, prescription, and procedure comes with its own set of forms. Not only is it time-consuming, but it’s also easy to get lost in all the medical jargon and insurance details.

3. Long Driving Distances

In America, everything is spread out, and I mean everything. You often have to drive for hours to get from one city to another. This can be tiring and quite different from the UK where you can easily cross several towns in less time. The long distances can make even a simple trip to the store a half-day affair.

4. Choosing Health Insurance

Choosing health insurance in the US is enough to make your head spin! There are so many options, each with its own pros and cons. You have to consider premiums, coverages, co-pays, networks…the list goes on. This is stressful because making the wrong choice can be costly.

5. Higher University Costs

The cost of university in America is sky-high compared to most UK universities. This can be a real shock. Not only do you have to pay tuition, but other costs like books, housing, and food all add up quickly. Many students end up with a huge amount of debt, which is a big worry.

6. Extreme Weather Events

The weather in the US can be wild. From hurricanes and tornadoes to extreme heat or cold, it’s all a bit much if you’re used to the milder UK climate. These extreme weather events can be scary and the damage can be serious, affecting everything from travel plans to daily life.

7. Job Insecurity in Some Industries

Job security isn’t the same across all industries in the US. Some sectors can have high turnover rates and less protection for workers compared to what you might expect in the UK. This uncertainty can be stressful if you’re not used to it.

8. Understanding State-by-State Laws

The US is unique in that laws can vary drastically from one state to another. What’s okay in one state can be illegal in another. This can be confusing and a bit of a headache to keep on top of, especially if you move states or travel frequently.

9. Car Dependency

In many parts of the US, having a car isn’t just a convenience, it’s a necessity. Public transport options are often not as comprehensive as they are in the UK. This means you’re driving a lot more, which can be exhausting and expensive with all the fuel, maintenance, and insurance costs.

10. Constant Tipping Expectations

The tipping culture in the US can be a bit overwhelming. Whether it’s restaurants, taxis, or even some more unexpected places, you’re expected to tip almost everywhere. Figuring out how much to tip each time can be annoying, especially if you’re tight on budget.
