10 Things Brits Think Are Becoming Too American in the UK

Save to Find It Later!

Recently, you might have noticed how some American trends are popping up more and more in the UK. From the way we shop to the way we build our communities, it seems like we’re picking up habits from across the pond. Let’s take a look at ten things that are starting to feel a bit too American for some Brits.

1. Larger coffee chains on every corner

Have you noticed more American coffee shops in your town? It’s not just you. Big brand coffee shops are popping up everywhere, replacing our cosy, independent cafes. These large chains bring with them a very different vibe – think less about the charm and more about convenience and uniformity. For those who love their morning cuppa with a personal touch, this shift can feel a bit much.

2. Growing tipping expectations

While tipping has always been a thing at restaurants, the expectation to tip for almost every service is growing. This is very much an American influence where tipping is more embedded in the culture. In the UK, we’ve traditionally not tipped quite as broadly or as generously, but the lines are starting to blur, leaving some of us a bit confused about when and how much we should be tipping.

3. Black Friday shopping frenzy

Black Friday has taken over November! What started as an American post-Thanksgiving sale has ballooned into a global shopping madness. Huge crowds and slashed prices are great for saving a few quid, but the chaos in shops and online can make this trend feel overwhelming. It’s a far cry from our more reserved sales events of the past.

4. Bigger pickup trucks on British roads

Once a rare sight, large American-style pickup trucks are now more common on UK roads. These big vehicles can be useful, sure, but they’re also bulkier and use more fuel than most of us are used to. They represent a shift towards bigger, which isn’t always better, especially on our narrow and winding roads.

5. Increasing use of gated developments

Gated communities are becoming a popular choice. Originally an American concept aimed at enhancing security and exclusivity, these developments are springing up across the UK. While they do offer peace of mind, they also create a physical divide between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’, changing the open community feel many of us grew up with.

6. More drive-thru services

Drive-thrus were once mostly just for fast food, but now we see them for everything from coffee to pharmacies. This trend towards convenience is straight out of the American playbook. For those of us who appreciate a slower pace and more face-to-face interaction, the rise in drive-thrus can seem a bit impersonal.

7. Corporate chain dominance

High streets across the UK are starting to look the same, dominated by the same few corporate chains. This model, very common in the US, can stifle local businesses and reduce the unique character of our towns and cities. This shift makes shopping a less diverse and interesting experience.

8. Over-the-top Halloween celebrations

Halloween used to be a modest affair in the UK, but now, inspired by the US, it’s all about extravagant decorations, costumes, and parties. While it’s fun, the scale and expense of modern Halloween can be a bit much, especially when compared to the simpler, spookier celebrations of years past.

9. Larger suburban housing estates

The American dream of a big house with a garden is becoming a UK aspiration too, leading to the development of larger suburban housing estates. While spacious, these estates can encourage a car-dependent lifestyle and lack the charm and convenience of more centrally located or traditionally designed homes.

10. More emphasis on personal branding

The concept of ‘personal branding’ is another import from America that’s gaining traction here. While it’s important to stand out in today’s competitive job market, the focus on marketing oneself constantly can feel unnatural. This approach to personal and professional life is a shift from our usually more reserved demeanour.
