10 Things Every Brit Should Do Before Their Summer Holiday This Year
Getting ready for a summer holiday is exciting, but there’s a bit to sort out before you go. From making sure your passport is up to date to checking roaming charges, I’ve put together a handy list of 10 essential checks and preparations. Follow these tips and you’ll be all set for a smooth and enjoyable holiday!
1. Check your passport expiry date well before you travel

First things first, let’s talk about your passport. It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget to check if your passport is still valid. Imagine getting all packed up, arriving at the airport, and then finding out your passport expired last month! Most countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of return. Double-check yours early to avoid any last-minute panic.
2. Make sure you have travel insurance that covers your plans

Next up is travel insurance. It’s a safety net that’s too important to ignore. Whether you’re planning to sip cocktails by the pool or go hiking in the mountains, make sure your insurance covers your activities and health. If something goes wrong, you’ll want to know you’re covered financially and can access medical help without fuss.
3. Order any medication you’ll need while away

If you take any regular medication, sort this out well in advance. The last thing you want is to run out of essential meds mid-trip. Speak to your doctor to make sure you have enough to last the duration of your holiday. Also, it’s smart to check the legality of your medication in the destination country; some drugs permitted here might be restricted abroad.
4. Apply for or check your GHIC card

The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) lets you get state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes free. If you don’t already have one, now’s the time to apply. If you have one, check it’s still valid. Just like with a passport, you don’t want to find out it’s expired when you need it most!
5. Look up local tourist taxes and entry rules

Every country has different entry rules and tourist taxes. Some places might require you to fill out forms before arrival or pay a small tax at your accommodation. Quick online research before you go can save you from stress and confusion when you land, letting you enjoy your holiday from the start.
6. Check your mobile roaming charges

Don’t forget about your phone! Roaming charges can be a nasty surprise. Check with your mobile provider about roaming policies for your destination. Some plans include roaming; others don’t. Knowing this can help you avoid a scary bill when you get home.
7. Download airline and travel apps before leaving

Airlines and travel apps can make your journey smoother. You can check-in online, download boarding passes, and keep updated on flight changes or delays. Having these apps ready on your phone means one less thing to worry about while you’re rushing to the airport.
8. Let your bank know if required before using your cards abroad

Before you head out, give your bank a heads up that you’ll be using your card abroad. This prevents your bank from flagging your overseas purchases as suspicious and blocking your card. A quick phone call or setting a travel notice through your bank’s app is all it takes.
9. Prepare for extreme heat with the right clothing and sunscreen

If you’re travelling to a hot climate, pack appropriate clothing and sunscreen. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are best for staying cool and comfortable. And don’t skimp on sunscreen – sunburn can not only ruin your holiday but is also harmful to your health.
10. Keep digital copies of important travel documents

Last but not least, keep digital copies of important documents like your passport, travel insurance, and any bookings. This means if you lose any documents, you’ll have backups stored safely. You can use cloud storage or email them to yourself for easy access anywhere.
