5 Reasons to Avoid Hollywood and 5 Things to Do Instead

Hollywood is often seen as a must-visit location in Los Angeles, but it has its downsides, from overcrowding to safety concerns. Actually, we didn’t really like the area and were pretty disappointed! We didn’t feel like it had anything to do with how Hollywood is actually represented in movies or talked about in general.

If you’re planning to visit LA and are reconsidering Hollywood, here are some compelling reasons to skip it and some fantastic alternatives to consider that we think will give you a more enjoyable experience.

1. Overcrowded

Hollywood often feels packed with tourists, which can diminish the enjoyment of your visit. The streets and popular attractions are usually crowded, making it difficult to truly appreciate the landmarks or even take good photos without interruptions.

2. Commercialized

In Hollywood, many attractions seem tailored more towards extracting money from visitors rather than providing a genuine experience. This commercialization is evident in the pricey souvenirs, expensive tours, and the general focus on merchandising rather than cultural value.

3. Traffic Congestion

Visiting Hollywood can be frustrating due to its notorious traffic jams. The congestion, along with limited parking spaces, often leads to a stressful experience rather than an enjoyable day out. We had a hard time finding parking and the one we found was overly expensive compared to other areas of LA. This can significantly cut into your time for exploring other beautiful parts of LA.

4. No Maintenance

Despite its iconic status, many areas in Hollywood appear old and poorly maintained, which can be off-putting. We were very surprised by this and not in a good way. The glitz and glamour portrayed in media are often overshadowed by the reality of neglected infrastructure and public spaces.

5. Safety Concerns

Some parts of Hollywood can be less safe, especially after dark. This concern might limit your ability to explore freely or enjoy the nightlife without worrying about your safety, which is not ideal when you’re trying to have a relaxing vacation.

What to Do Instead

Hollywood is far from being the best part of LA. After our trip, we wished we didn’t spend any time at all there. In our experience, seeing the stars on the ground was not nearly enough to justify spending time there. Here are some activities we recommend instead.

Visit Griffith Park

Instead of fighting through crowds in Hollywood, why not head to Griffith Park? You can enjoy a peaceful hike, visit the renowned Griffith Observatory, or simply soak in the stunning views of the city. This park offers a refreshing escape into nature.

Explore Venice Canals

The Venice Canals offer a unique experience far from the commercial hustle of Hollywood. Walking along these beautiful waterways, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a different, more tranquil world, where you can enjoy the scenic views and charming architecture at your own pace.

Santa Monica provides a perfect blend of beach fun and shopping opportunities without the overwhelming commercial feel of Hollywood. Relax on the sandy beach, stroll along the iconic pier, or shop at the Third Street Promenade. It’s an ideal spot for a more laid-back day.

Visit the Getty Center to view impressive art collections and exquisite gardens. Here, you can immerse yourself in art and culture in a serene environment, away from the chaotic tourist traps of Hollywood. The center’s architecture and panoramic views of Los Angeles are also a big draw.

Pasadena

For a taste of history and culture, head to Pasadena. Explore the historic Old Town, visit the Norton Simon Museum, and stroll through the beautiful residential areas. Pasadena offers a more cultured and less hectic environment compared to Hollywood, making it a delightful part of your LA visit.
