What is the postcode for Dublin?

Whether you’re trying to send mail to someone in Dublin or you’ve just moved to Dublin, you may be looking for the postal code for Dublin. In reality, it happens that you’re actually looking for something that does not exist. But don’t worry, Eric and I also made that mistake when we moved to Dublin!

There is no such thing as a Dublin Ireland postcode or a Dublin postal code, whichever way you’d like to call it. Instead, each address in Dublin, whether personal or commercial as a dedicated and unique Dublin post code

This system is quite different from most of other countries. Most countries in Europe or beyond, like France, Canada or the USA, use the same postal codes for an entire cluster of addresses whether those be a village, town or city, rather than for each address in your location. In Ireland, it’s not uncommon for separate properties to share the same address which can make it difficult for the mail to be delivered. That’s why there is a different Eircode for each individual address.

What do you call a postcode of Dublin?

If you’re anything like us when moving to Dublin, you are looking for a postcode for Dublin Ireland. Note that in Ireland, the postcode or postal code is replaced by the term Eircode. If you look for postcode Ireland Dublin and then your address, it may be difficult to find your postcode. Instead, by using the word “Eircode”, you’ll find it more quickly!

Ireland zip code format and type of postcode in Dublin

The Irish Eircode follows a strict format. It’s made of 8 digits that are grouped in a group of three digits and then four digits with a space between them.

The first three digits are called the Routing Key and are specific to certain areas of Dublin and Ireland. For example, a postcode Dublin Ireland has in Dublin 16 will start with D16.

The last four digits are called the unique identifier. It’s the part that identifies your unique location.

The story of the Eircode, the unique system of postal codes in Dublin and Ireland

The Eircode was created in 2015 and is managed by AnPost, the public post service of Ireland. Before 2015, both individual and commercial properties only had an address without an Eircode. This revealed to create difficulties, especially when it came to distribute mail to the right recipients, as some properties shared the same address. It was estimated that over 30% of addresses in Ireland shared their address with another property which is quite high.

As we’ve lived in Dublin, we can testify of how challenging it could sometimes be to get your mail and packages delivered properly from the post office so we can’t imagine what it was like before the creation of the Eircode!

Once the Eircode was created, each address in Ireland was attributed a unique number with 8 digits as explained above. In practice, this means that each property, whether personal or commercial and whether that’d be a house or an apartment, has been given a unique identifying number. For example, Eric and I has a unique number for our address while our neighbors, who lived on the same floor as us had a different number.

What’s your Eircode?

if you can’t find your postcode in Dublin through these above methods, you may not have one yet. This is possible if your house or apartment is new. In that case, the owner will have to add the property to the database managed by An Post GeoDirectory. Once it’s been added to the database, the owner will need to wait for the next quarter to receive the assigned Eircode.

Will my mail be delivered to the Republic of Ireland without an Eircode?

Yes, your mail will still be delivered even if you didn’t indicate an Eircode. Though the Eircode system isn’t brand new, AnPost and other private delivery services can still find you using the regular address. note also that if you receive a package through AnPost, you can go get them at the depot.
