Another rule is that it is not allowed to spread foie gras like butter. You should be able to see pieces of foie gras on your piece of toast as opposed to a spread. When meeting Americans for the first time, the first thing they always tell me is “Oui Oui Bonjour” which I find quite funny!

26. Bon appetit

“Bon appetit” means “enjoy your meal” and is used a lot by English speakers. The right pronunciation is “bohn-ah-peh-tee” though English speakers love to add a “t” sound at the end! Note that the “t” is actually silent and shouldn’t be pronounced.

This French phrase is so famous that it is even added to songs such as the song “Bon appétit” by Katy Perry.

27. Oui oui

French People are very famous for saying “oui oui” (yes yes) instead of just “oui” (yes). It is true that in France, we often use the double oui. Every time I meet a foreigner and tell them I’m from France, they’ll say “oh oui oui”. It seems that that’s something that we’re definitely known for!

French people in general are also more direct so if something is wrong, they will tell you. Having lived in North America, I can definitely say that Americans and Canadians tend to be less blunt about things and instead sugar coat things a bit as they are worried they could seem rude or ungrateful.
