Alpaca walking Ireland Q&As

Can you take an alpaca for a walk in Ireland?

Yes, alpaca walking in Ireland is becoming a popular activity although it is still unknown from a lot of people. Most alpaca farms in Ireland allow you to walk one alpaca, feed them, take photos and snuggle them. You can also offer an alpaca walk to a traveler friend for example. It’s quite a unique traveler gift idea that your loved ones will remember forever!

Where can you see alpacas in Ireland?

In Ireland, you can see alpacas at 22 alpaca farms spread over Ireland. Some are dedicated to alpaca walks and alpaca treks and some are farms who host lots of different farm animals, including alpacas. We have included alpaca farms near Dublin, alpaca farms near Kildare, alpaca farms near Offaly and alpaca farms in the North West and South West of Ireland. We have also included alpaca experiences in Northern Ireland.

Practical tips about Alpaca walking Ireland experiences

alpaca trekking Ireland

Alpaca walking Ireland experiences are very fun and honestly will bring so much positivity in your life. That said, there are a few practical things to know before embarking on a walk with an alpaca. Below, you will find alpaca walking practical tips we gathered from our own personal alpaca walking experience.

  • Shoes: Alpaca trekking Ireland offers often take place in fields or forests on uneven trails. Although you will get a nice breath of fresh air and will definitely connect with nature, it’s better to be prepared to have the best alpaca walking experience. That’s why we recommend wearing comfortable walking or hiking shoes. All the alpaca walks in Ireland w have gathered in this post are relatively easy and often suitable for most people. However, there can be steep sections on the trail. Ireland is also known for being rainy, often unexpectedly, turning trails into muddy paths. With comfortable hiking shoes, you will be well equipped to walk in the mud!
  • Rain jacket: We almost feel like we shouldn’t even mention this as it is a given in Ireland, but bringing a rain jacket is definitely a good idea even during summer. Ireland’s weather is very unpredictable and most tours in Ireland still go ahead even if it rains. To enjoy your alpaca trekking experience in Ireland, bring a rain jacket.
  • The weather: Most walks still go ahead even if it is raining. However, your alpaca adventure can be rescheduled if it becomes dangerous for the animals or for yourself. That includes bad weather such as storms, heavy rain or high temperatures (unlikely here but hey you never know!).
  • Book alpaca walk experiences: We recommend to book your alpaca walk in Ireland ahead of time. Most alpaca farms do not take drop-ins as they need to prepare the alpacas for the walks and can only take a limited number of people to not overwhelm the animals. We have included all the booking information for each alpaca trekking experience in this post.
  • So much cuteness: Be ready for a lot of cuteness and never wanting to leave. We had an amazing experience with the alpacas on our walk. Alpacas are kind, quirky and very gentle. You will notice that we have included alpaca yoga experiences and alpaca therapy experiences in this post. That’s because alpacas are great for reliving stress and anxiety. They are super curious too and quite funny!
  • Memorable photos: All alpaca walking experiences in this post provide time for lots of photos.
  • Accessibility: An alpaca walk or alpaca trek experience usually takes place on uneven grounds so accessibility is limited. However, if you have a disability or are in a wheelchair, we recommend calling the alpaca farms to check that the premises are accessible. You can also arrange a meet and greet experience. Most of the alpaca farms in Ireland are willing to accommodate so definitely give them a call. Alternatively other experiences with alpacas such as alpaca therapy are also available.
  • Babies: Baby alpacas can be seen in July or August and are called Cria.
  • Don’t get too excited about adopting: While visiting an alpaca farm and walking with alpacas, there is no doubt that you will want to bring one home with you. In Ireland, it’s actually quite easy to find an alpaca for sale. Ireland has several alpaca farms that breed alpacas to sell them. However, we would like to remind you that alpacas live in herds and need at least one buddy roommate to be happy. On your alpaca walk, you will learn that taking care of one or several alpacas is actually a lot of work and is not for everybody. Although they are cute and quirky, a pet alpaca is just like a wild alpaca, meaning it is a living and breathing being so please consider the question seriously before making a decision. Although it is tempting to give in, we see lots of people abandoning their pets all the time and it is heart breaking. Sometimes it is best to stick to a couple hours of happiness!

The Naked Sheep in Kerry, one the best experiences of alpaca walking Ireland has to offer

alpaca walking Ireland

We loved our experience at the Naked Sheep in Kerry and cannot recommend it enough. The Naked Sheep is an alpaca farm located near Tuosist in Kerry. It offers amazing views on Cloonee Lough and the mountains. This is one of the best alpaca trekking Kerry has to offer!

When arriving, Mia and Simon were here to welcome us and show us around. In total, they have 17 alpacas and also a couple of llama (they sneaked in here!). For the whole experience, we were in a small group which was very nice and more intimate. It didn’t feel super touristy but more like an immersion experience which we appreciated. First, Mia explained a bit more about the alpacas to us including how they came to Ireland and safety measures when walking them and being around them. Then we headed to the paddock and were each assigned one alpaca. Eric got Pluto, a beautiful grey alpaca and I got Monkey. You will notice on the photo that Monkey and I coordinated our outfits!

The walk takes places in a magical forest next to the farm. The ambiance was superb and we had an amazing time on the walk. The walk was easy and slow paced to suit the alpacas’ pace. In the middle of the trek, we stopped to feed some apples to the alpacas. They loved it and were a bit crazy about it! This was an extremely funny experience! We got to pet them, snuggle them a bit and look at them being curious and quirky. We also stopped to take photos on the way.

After the walk, we came back to the farm and released the alpacas in their paddock. We headed to one of the farm’s rooms to have some nibbles and drinks and talk about alpaca fleece. Mia explained to us how she uses the alpaca fleece to make all sorts of alpaca clothing and accessories.

The whole experience lasted about 2 hours.

Best Alpaca Walking near Dublin

Are you wondering what farm for alpaca walking Dublin offers? Experiences of alpaca trekking Dublin has to offer are unfortunately limited. Although there are lots of things to do when spending a few days in Dublin, it is relatively small compared to other capitals and remains a city, therefore not ideal to set up an alpaca farm. However, there are several alpaca walking experiences near Dublin which we have listed below.

K2 Alpacas, walking alpacas Wicklow style

The Wicklow Mountains National Park is one of the greatest places in Ireland for outdoor experiences. Wicklow actually has some of the best walks near Dublin and is perfect for a quick getaway from the city. K2 alpacas is the one alpaca trekking Dublin has to offer closest to the city. This alpaca farm is located in county Wicklow about an hour from Dublin.

K2 alpaca farm offers several alpaca experiences that we have detailed below.

  • Alpaca and Prosecco Trek Experience: This is a 2 hour alpaca trekking Ireland during which you will walk the alpacas, feed them and learn more about them and how they came to Wicklow.  At the end, you will get to drink some prosecco or juice. This is an alpaca walk Wicklow offers every Saturday and Sunday at 10am and 2pm.

Budget: €38 per person.

  • Alpaca therapy: K2 Alpacas also offers alpaca therapy which improves mental and physical health. The farm provides animal assisted activities and animal assisted interventions which are suitable if you have special needs or suffer from stress and anxiety. You can contact them for more information on this service.
  • Meet and greet alpaca experience: During 45 minutes, you will get to feed the alpacas and watch them interact.
  • Special occasions: K2 Alpacas also host special occasions to celebrate key life moments with alpacas.
  • Weddings: The farm can bring two alpacas to your wedding for about two hours to snuggle your guests and take fun photos.
  • Gift vouchers: If you want to offer a memorable moment to a friend or family, you can purchase a gift vouche

Insider Tip: Every time we have tried to go, slots are always booked or there is only one alpaca left. As this is the only alpaca trekking Wicklow has to offer, we recommend booking long in advance to ensure you can get a spot on the walk!

Insider Tips: We have also noticed on photos that the walking groups are larger than some of the other alpaca walking experiences in this listed. This is quite logical as this farm is the closest to Dublin, the capital of Ireland. Therefore it attracts lots of locals and tourists. For us, it is not a problem as we don’t mind being around tourists (as long as the animals are happy) so if you can find a booking available, we would recommend to go as it is a fun experience. However, if you are looking for a more intimate experience, some of the other farms on this list might be more suitable.
