What to wear on a hike date: why dressing appropriately is important

What to take on a day hike can be difficult to gauge depending on whether it’s your first date or you’ve known each other for some time. Before getting into what to wear on hiking date outfits, we wanted to share why it’s important to dress appropriately for a hiking date.

Comfort, the basis of what to wear on a hike date

When going on a hike date, you want to ensure that you and your partner are as comfortable as possible. By dressing appropriately, you can avoid feeling hot or cold, which can ruin your experience. Choosing clothes that are breathable, flexible, and sweat-wicking can help you stay comfortable throughout your hike. Additionally, wearing shoes that provide enough support can prevent blisters, sore feet, and other foot-related issues. When you’re comfortable, you can focus on enjoying the experience and being present with your partner, which can lead to a successful and enjoyable first date.

Safety

Hiking comes with its fair share of safety hazards, such as ticks and sunburns. Dressing appropriately can help protect you and your partner from these hazards. Wearing clothes that cover your skin can prevent tick bites, which can cause Lyme disease, while using sunscreen can help prevent sunburns and skin damage. Additionally, wearing a hat and sunglasses can help protect your face and eyes from harmful UV rays. Wearing the right shoes is also extremely important as it can affect your knees and hips. By taking these safety precautions, you can enjoy a safe and romantic hike with your partner without worrying about the risks.

We also recommend not getting tricked by the morning layers of clouds that can cloud (lol) your judgement when it comes to sunscreen or UV T-Shirts. Hiking as a morning date is a great idea but you’ll have to still protect your skin from the sun!

Feeling more confident for a successful date

Dressing appropriately for your hike date can help you feel more confident and attractive, which can lead to a successful date. Choosing clothes that fit you well and flatter your body can help you feel more comfortable in your own skin, which can help you connect with your partner. Additionally, wearing clothes that make you feel good can boost your mood and energy levels, making you more fun and enjoyable to be around. When you feel confident and happy, your partner will pick up on those vibes, leading to a more successful and memorable first date.

Tips for what to wear on a hike date

Whether you’re hiking on a first date or a weekly date, the tips in this section will help you choose what to wear on a hike date.

What to wear hiking date style: The power of layers

If you’re wondering what to wear on a hike date, this is probably one of the best tips of all: wear layers. Wearing layers is a great tip for what to wear on a hiking date because it allows you to be prepared for any type of weather that may arise. If you’re hiking during the shoulder season, you can take off a layer or two to show a little skin and flirt with your partner if it gets too hot. Plus, layering allows you to sweat less, which isn’t the most romantic thing to do on a date. By wearing layers, you can be comfortable and prepared for any weather changes that may occur during your romantic hike.

When we lived and dated in Ireland, Eric and I did many hikes. Because Ireland’s weather changes quickly even during spring or summer, we always wore layers. That allowed us to be prepared for any change in temperatures and weather and stay comfortable throughout the hikes.

Keep it simple

When going on a hiking date what to wear can become overwhelming. You want to look cute and be prepared for a comfortable hike. Also remember that even though you’re going hiking, you may come across other activities like kayaking to a canyon! Keeping it simple is important when deciding what to wear on a hiking date. You don’t want to bring too many accessories or layers that will just get in the way.

This can make you appear overdone and not familiar with hiking. By keeping it simple, you can focus on the connection with your partner and enjoy the hike without worrying about extra layers or accessories getting in the way.

Wear breathing fabrics

Breathing fabrics are a great option for what to wear on a hiking date. These materials dry quickly from sweat, won’t smell quickly, and won’t mark with sweat, allowing you to stay fresh and look clean. Materials such as merino wool, bamboo, and synthetic blends are all great options. By wearing breathable fabrics, you can stay comfortable and confident throughout your hike.

Dress for the location

Dressing for the location is crucial when deciding what to wear on a hiking date. Easy trails could be done in flip-flops, while others require proper hiking boots. Hiking in Santa Barbara for a date isn’t the same as going on a date hiking in Scotland. Research the location and determine what is appropriate footwear for the terrain. This will not only keep you safe but also ensure you don’t look out of place or over or underdressed.

Dress for the weather, not to impress

When deciding what to wear on a hiking date, it’s important to dress for the weather, not to impress. If it’s cold outside, you shouldn’t wear a crop top just to look cute. Instead, dress appropriately for the weather to ensure you’re comfortable and safe. This shows your partner that you prioritize their comfort and safety over your appearance, which can be very attractive. Eric and I always dress appropriately for the weather and sometimes we end up looking way sillier than we intended but at least, we can enjoy ourselves!

Use what you already own

If it’s your first hiking date, it’s a good idea to use what you already own. You don’t want to spend money on new clothes if you’re not sure you’ll like your partner or hiking in general. For a hiking first date, wear clothes that are appropriate for the activity, and make sure they fit you well and are comfortable.

Type of trail

The type of trail you’ll be hiking on is an important factor to consider when deciding what to wear on a hiking date. Concrete, pebbles, dirt roads, and sand all require different types of footwear. Research the trail and determine what shoes will be most appropriate. This will ensure you’re comfortable and safe throughout your hike.

Stay within your personal style

It’s important to stay within your personal style when deciding what to wear on a hiking date. You want to be comfortable but also show your personality. If you never wear red, don’t start now. You want to be true to yourself and not misrepresent who you are to your partner. This will not only make you more comfortable but also make your partner more attracted to you as they get to see the real you.

How to look cute while hiking

Hiking date ideas can be made as chill or as romantic as you wish. But one thing is sure, you want to feel as cute and confident as possible on your date! How to look cute hiking is actually not very difficult. In this section, we shared some tips that we use to look cute that are easy to add to an outfit for hiking.

What to wear on a hike date: Accessories

Accessories can add a touch of personality to your outfit, and they can also serve a functional purpose. Hats and sunglasses can protect you from the sun, while a backpack can carry your essentials. A cute necklace can add a touch of sparkle to your outfit, and cute socks can add a fun pop of color. Your partner will appreciate the effort you put into your outfit, and it can make for some fun photo opportunities on the hike.

Be comfortable

Comfort is key when it comes to feeling cute on a hiking date. Make sure you’re wearing shoes that won’t give you blisters, and dress appropriately for the weather. If you’re too cold or too hot, you won’t feel confident or cute. Your partner will also appreciate your comfort and will enjoy the hike more if you’re not complaining about sore feet or shivering.

Playful patterns

What to wear on a hike date to look cuter? Playful patterns! Wearing playful patterns can make you stand out on a hike. Floral prints or animal patterns can add a fun touch to your outfit, and show off your playful side. Your partner will appreciate your playful spirit, and it can make for some fun conversation topics on the hike.

Choose flattering colors

Certain colors can be more flattering on certain people, so choose colors that complement your skin tone and make you feel good. Your partner will appreciate your confidence and your willingness to show off your best features.

Experiment with hairstyles

Experimenting with different hairstyles can add some variety to your look. Try a cute braided hairstyle, a messy bun, or a half-up, half-down style. Your partner will appreciate the effort you put into your appearance, and it can also be a fun conversation starter.

Light makeup

Wearing light makeup can help you feel put together and confident without feeling overdone. Choose a tinted moisturizer, some mascara, and a touch of lip balm to keep your look natural and fresh. I(Marie) usually choose not to wear any makeup when gong on a hike but when I want to feel cuter, I’ll add one layer of mascara and just a bit of chapstick! Your partner will appreciate your natural beauty, and it can also help you feel more comfortable if you’re not used to wearing a lot of makeup.

A good attitude

Your attitude can make a big difference in how cute you feel on a hiking date. Approach the hike with a positive attitude, and be open to new experiences. Your partner will appreciate your positive energy and your willingness to try new things.

Add a fanny pack

A fanny pack can be a cute and practical addition to your hiking outfit. It can keep your essentials within reach, and can also add a touch of retro flair to your look. Your partner will appreciate your practicality and your willingness to embrace a fun fashion trend.

What to wear to hiking on a first date

On a first hiking date wear something comfortable while still looking and feeling confident. It’s important to wear clothes that suit your personality and style, rather than feeling pressured to follow the latest trends. For example, I (Marie) love wearing crop tops but they can be quite uncomfortable if you have a bigger chest or if you’re not used to wearing them. Just because they are the hype doesn’t mean that’s your go to hiking outfit from now on. Summer trends also tend to show hiking women in short shorts and sports bra. Just because it’s the trend, don’t feel like you have to wear that. I would never feel confident in such outfit but I hype girls who do! So do you and wear something that makes you feel good.

In addition, we recommend choosing clothes that fit well and allow for ease of movement, such as breathable and moisture-wicking materials. These will help avoid big sweat marks which can make you feel embarrassed on a first date (though they’re totally normal!).

Hiking shoes or boots with good traction are also a must to prevent slips or falls. You don’t want to hurt yourself on a first date, do you? Check the weather forecast and layer up appropriately, but don’t overdo it, as you don’t want to be overheating.

We recommend to avoid wearing clothing that may be revealing or require constant adjustment, as this can be distracting and uncomfortable. We also recommend staying away from clothes who weren’t meant for hiking. You may get away with wearing a dress when hiking to the Hollywood sign but if you’re going on a first date hike in the backcountry, you’ll want to be dressed appropriately with clothes that can resist sitting on rocks and getting dusty.

Lastly, accessorize with sunglasses, a hat, or a backpack to complete your hiking look. Remember, the goal is to enjoy the experience, so wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and you’ll be sure to have a great time

What to wear hiking in the spring

Spring is a time of renewal and growth, and it’s also a great time to hit the trails. However, the weather can be unpredictable, so finding a good spring hiking outfit can be difficult. Layers and clothes that will keep you dry and comfortable, as well as provide protection from sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions are a good starting point. Here are some clothes that we recommend and that you can easily layer as well.

It is essential to know what to wear hiking in the fall as temperatures fluctuate quickly. We recommend that you dress in layers that can be added or removed as needed. Eric and I have done many hikes in the Wicklow National Park in Ireland during fall so we’ve got good experience with changing weather and how to dress for it when hiking! What to wear on a hiking date girl or boy style includes similar clothing items such as clothes made of breathable, moisture-wicking materials will keep you dry and comfortable, while a lightweight rain jacket will protect you from unexpected showers. Winter hiking can be both beautiful and challenging, so you need to dress accordingly. Warm, insulated hiking clothes will protect you from the cold, while waterproof boots and a sturdy jacket will keep you dry and shield you from the wind. Here are some items we love for a proper hiking date outfit winter style.

What shoes to wear for hiking

When looking at what to wear on hike date, you can’t forget about shoes! Choosing the right hiking shoes for your date can make or break your hiking experience. We’ve both hiked in city sneakers and flip-flops before and we would not recommend. Ever since we’ve had proper hiking shoes, we can’t go back! Consider factors such as terrain, weather, and the length of the hike. Look for shoes with good traction, durable materials, and a comfortable fit.

What to wear on a hike date: Hiking Boots

For a date hike with challenging terrain or steep inclines, you’ll need hiking boots that offer ankle support. Danner Boots or Columbia Newton Ridge Hiking Boots are great options. These boots provide a sturdy grip and protect your ankle from injuries.

What to wear with hiking boots

You can wear all the outfits we have listed above with hiking boots. Easy bottoms to style with hiking boots are leggings and shorts.

Hiking Shoes

For a day hike with moderate terrain, hiking shoes with no ankle support are perfect for every step. Mountain Warehouse Trail Runners are comfortable and lightweight, allowing for a more natural stride.

Hiking Sandals

If you’re going on a summer hike, hiking sandals like Tevas or Chacos are the way to go. They’re breathable, lightweight, and quick-drying. You’ll be able to wade through streams without worrying about soggy shoes.

Running Shoes with Grip

If you’re going on a hike with a mix of terrain, consider using running shoes with a good grip. Nike runners are a great option, as they offer traction and stability while still being lightweight.

Waterproof Shoes

If there’s a chance of rain or water crossings, waterproof shoes are essential. Look for shoes with Gore-Tex or similar waterproof materials. Danner Boots or Columbia Newton Ridge Hiking Boots are great options for waterproof shoes. I have waterproof hiking shoes while Eric doesn’t and we can clearly see a difference. I can go through streams, walk in mud, or hike in the rain without my feet getting wet while Eric usually struggles a bit more! Having wet feet can also make you colder so it’s best to have waterproof hiking shoes for the most comfort.

What to wear to go hiking: Should I wear makeup

Choosing what to wear while hiking isn’t only about clothes. Though there is no hiking dress code, many people out there wonder whether they should wear makeup as well. Of course, when going on a date, you always want to look your best. But is makeup really a good idea? Here’s our take on it.

Pros of wearing makeup on a hike date

Light makeup to enhance your features

Wearing light makeup on a hiking date can help to enhance your natural beauty and highlight your best features, making you feel more confident and attractive to your partner. A bit of mascara, tinted lip balm, and light foundation or concealer can give you a fresh, natural look that is perfect for a day out in nature.

Make you feel more confident

I (Marie) used to have severe acne and makeup was sometimes what would get me out of the door so I totally understand what it’s like to use makeup to feel more confident. When you feel confident, you radiate beauty and charm. Applying light makeup on a hiking date can help to boost your confidence and make you feel more comfortable in your own skin. You can focus on enjoying the hike and your partner’s company instead of feeling self-conscious.

Use waterproof makeup to make sure it doesn’t budge

A bit of waterproof makeup can help you look fresh and put-together even if you get sweaty or splashed by a stream. Waterproof mascara and foundation can help to keep your makeup in place, even if you start to perspire or if it starts raining. You can rest assured that your makeup will stay put and you’ll look cute throughout the hike.

Cons of wearing makeup on a hike date

Sweet can ruin it

Mascara, eyeliner, and other eye makeup can smudge and create “panda eyes” by the end of the date. This can ruin the overall look and affect your confidence, which can impact the mood of the date. Your partner may also be distracted by the smudged makeup and not focus on you.

Might turn your partner off if too much makeup

If you wear too much makeup on a hiking date, your partner might be turned off as it can look like you are more focused on your appearance than the activity and your date. Additionally, if you are sweating, makeup can look cakey and unappealing, which can make you feel less confident. If your partner notices your confidence is decreasing they may feel that you don’t like them and that might make the date a bit awkward.

Make up and sweat can cause acne

Hiking involves physical activity that can make you sweat, which combined with makeup can clog pores and cause acne breakouts. This can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, especially if it’s a first date, and can impact your confidence. It’s better to keep things natural and focus on enjoying the activity and spending time with your partner.

Pros of not wearing makeup on a hiking date

Show your true self

Going makeup-free on a hiking date can show your natural beauty and make your date appreciate you for who you are. It also removes the pressure of trying to impress them with a flawless appearance, especially if it’s a first date. You can be comfortable and confident in your own skin and not worry about hiding behind a mask of makeup later on.

More comfort

Makeup can feel heavy and uncomfortable, especially if you’re sweating on a hiking date. Going without makeup can allow your skin to breathe and be comfortable in the heat. It also means you don’t have to worry about smudging or streaking, which can be a concern with sweat and heat.

Quicker to get ready

Without the need to spend time applying and perfecting your makeup, you can get ready faster and enjoy more time with your partner on your hiking date. It also means less stress and less need to rush around, leaving you feeling more relaxed and ready to enjoy the outdoors.

Won’t have to touch up

Not wearing makeup on a hiking date also means you don’t have to bring a lot of extra things with you, such as touch-up makeup, brushes, or applicators. This can make packing for the date simpler and easier, so you can focus on enjoying the hike and your time with your partner.

Other things to wear on a hike date

What to wear on a hiking trip doesn’t only concern clothes. There are other items we recommend you wear on you when going hiking for a date.

Marie wearing shorts and a bathing suit for a hike by the sea during summer
Marie wearing shorts and a bathing suit for a hike by the sea during summer

A bathing suit

Hear us out! Many hikes lead to either a lake or natural hot springs like in Lake Tahoe. It would be a shame to reach those beautiful romantic locations and not be equipped to take a dip! Eric and I love going to the lake or hot springs, it’s like a date at a natural spa! So you’ll need to bring your bathing suit to be ready!

A cute backpack

A backpack is an essential item to bring on a hiking date. It allows you to carry your water bottle, snacks, and other necessities. You can choose a cute and stylish backpack that complements your outfit, making it a great accessory. Plus, it shows that you’re prepared and have everything you need for a fun and comfortable hiking experience.

Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen is important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. It also prevents sunburn, which can be painful and unattractive. By applying sunscreen, you show that you care about your skin and your health. Your date will appreciate your effort to take care of yourself, and you’ll feel more confident with healthy-looking skin.

Fitness tracker or Apple Watch

A fitness tracker or Apple Watch can help you keep track of your progress and monitor your heart rate. It shows that you’re committed to fitness and health. Plus, if you and your date have a competitive spirit, you can use your tracker to see who can reach the top of the trail first.

Cellphone

Bringing your cell phone is important for safety reasons. In case of an emergency or if you get lost, you can easily call for help. Plus, it’s a great way to take pictures of your hiking date and the beautiful scenery around you.

Bug spray

Bug bites can be annoying and uncomfortable, especially if you’re trying to have a romantic date. Bringing bug spray shows that you’re prepared and care about your comfort. It also helps to prevent insect-borne illnesses.

What not to wear on a hiking date

When choosing what to wear on a hike date, there are things you should put aside right away!

Jeans or Denim Shorts

They are not suitable for hiking because they are too tight and do not allow for movements. Hiking involves a lot of movement and denim shorts can restrict your movement, making it uncomfortable. Additionally, denim shorts are not suitable for hot weather conditions, and you do not want to ruin a nice pair of denims with mud or scratch it in the branches.

Flip Flops

Flip flops are not practical hiking footwear as they do not provide enough grip. Hiking involves a lot of uneven terrain, and flip flops will not give you the traction you need, increasing the risk of slipping and hurting yourself. They also don’t protect your feet from bugs, and you don’t want to twist your ankle on the trail. Plus sunburns on feet are the worse!!

Slippery Sneakers

Commercial sneakers from big brands generally don’t have good grip as they are made for the city, and not for hiking. Slippery sneakers can be dangerous, especially if you are hiking on rocky terrain or steep inclines. Additionally, you don’t want to ruin an expensive pair of sneakers with mud or have grass’ green colour transfer on them.

New Shoes or Clothes

Hiking with new shoes or clothes can be painful, and may cause blisters, back pain, or knee pain, which will only make the date unpleasant. Also, you might complain a lot and not enjoy the experience. Hiking is all about being comfortable, and itchy clothes or shoes that don’t fit well will only make the experience miserable.

Is a dress for hiking a good idea?

Dresses are not practical for hiking as they don’t protect your legs from bugs like ants or ticks. Additionally, hiking involves a lot of movement, and dresses can restrict your movement, making it difficult and uncomfortable to hike.

Cotton

Cotton is not breathable and does not dry quickly. When you sweat, cotton will trap moisture, which can lead to chafing, blisters, and discomfort. Hiking involves a lot of sweating, and wearing cotton clothes can make the hike miserable. Instead, choose clothes made of moisture-wicking materials like polyester or nylon that will keep you dry and comfortable on the trail.

What to wear hiking in Hawaii

Hiking in Hawaii is perfect for a date as it provides breathtaking views of lush forests, majestic waterfalls, and stunning coastlines, offering plenty of opportunities for memorable moments with your significant other. The peaceful serenity of the natural surroundings, coupled with the invigorating exercise of hiking, can create an unforgettable experience and strengthen your bond. But hiking in Hawaii as its challenges when it comes to what you should wear. When Marie visited Hawaii, hiking was challenging as it was really hot and humid.

When hiking in Hawaii, it’s important to consider the warm and humid climate, as well as the potential for sudden rainfall. Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing is essential to keep cool and dry, along with comfortable and sturdy footwear. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection.

Date outfits for hiking in Hawaii include wearing a swim suit top with a light t-shirt and shorts for women or wearing shorts and a light shirt for mean. Wearing a swim suit under your hiking outfits or swim shorts as your hiking outfits will make it a lot easier to turn your hiking date into a date at the beach if you wish to prolong it!
