Our experience watching the sunsets in Oahu

The sunset Hawaii offers is absolutely gorgeous! While we visited Oahu, we got to experience stunning sunsets along the coast. on our first night, we got to see it from Makapu’u Point. Sunset on the ocean from Oahu's coast
Sunset on the ocean from Oahu’s coast

On our last night, we saw one of the most beautiful sunsets in Oahu from Waikiki and the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon. We like this lagoon because the water is more shallow and therefore warmer than the ocean. We sat on the sand and spent some time in the water during the day. We also got some food at the local sandwich place. By the evening, we saw the color of the sky changing over the ocean. We got to watch the sunset from the lagoon and it was gorgeous! The light was super bright and the colors beautiful! Because this is in Waikiki, it’s easily accessible and you can enjoy the beach at the same time! Last but not least, the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort awaits you on Waikiki Beach. With its swimming pool, spa, and fitness center, you and your partner can unwind and relax before heading to the beach for a spectacular sunset experience.

The pool comes with slides and amazing views on Waikiki. Here, you’ll find every single service you could be looking for from water activities to hotel services. Note that this is a larger hotel so it can feel busier and you may have to wait in line here and there.

The location and ocean view were key. Having a breakfast in the balcony, listening to the waves is kind of priceless. But it felt like that’s what we were paying for. The rest regarding room and services was like any regular 3 stars hotel. – Vinicius, Canada (Read more reviews here)

Tips for finding the best Oahu sunsets

When you and your partner are seeking the most magical sunsets in Oahu, there are some simple but essential tips to keep in mind. With the right preparations and timing, you can make the most of your sunset adventures and create beautiful memories together.

  • Head to the North Shore for the Best Views: For stunning sunset views, head to the North Shore of Oahu. As the sun sets in the west, this region offers some of the most picturesque settings for witnessing the beauty of the fading daylight. The combination of the ocean’s expanse and the island’s landscape makes it an ideal spot to capture breathtaking sunset moments.
  • Check the Weather Forecast: Hawaii’s weather can be unpredictable, so before heading out to watch the sunset, check the weather forecast. If it’s overcast or rainy, it might hinder your view. Being aware of the weather conditions ensures that you and your partner choose the perfect evening for an unobstructed and awe-inspiring sunset experience.
  • Go Early, Especially in Summer: Sunset spots in Oahu, especially popular ones, tend to get crowded, especially during the summer months when more tourists flock to the island. To secure a good spot and parking, it’s best to arrive about an hour earlier than the expected sunset time. This way, you can comfortably settle in, find a prime spot, and prepare to be captivated by the beauty of the setting sun.
  • Consider Sunrise Spots for a Unique Experience: While you’re exploring Oahu’s sunsets, don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness its equally magical sunrises. Head to the east coast, where spots like Lanikai Beach, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike, and Makapu’u Beach Park offer incredible sunrise views. It’s a fantastic way to start your day with your partner, surrounded by the island’s natural beauty.
  • Be Mindful of Sunset Time: Sunset times in Oahu vary throughout the year, but they typically occur around 6 pm and 7 pm. Keep in mind that Hawaii doesn’t observe daylight savings time, so you’ll experience longer days in the summer and shorter days in the winter. Adjust your plans accordingly to make the most of the daylight hours.
  • Hiking Tips for Sunset Chasers: If you’re planning to hike to a sunset lookout point, ensure that you go equipped for the journey. Start your hike at least two hours before the expected sunset time to give yourself enough time to reach the summit or lookout. Additionally, bring a headlamp, as it might be dark on your way back down after the sun sets.
