Why is the beach good for a romantic date?

According to the British health entity Healthwatch Cornwall, being by the sea impacts the brain positively in many ways. According to Healthwatch Cornwall, the blue collar of the sea is associated by the brain to relaxation which makes it easier to be at peace by the sea. Increased levels of Vitamin D and negative ions by the sea also help feeling more relaxed and happy and are event great tools to fight depression. Being by the sea has proven to put people in a meditative state and to increase gratitude.

For those reasons, the beach is a positive location where people are more prone to be relaxed and fully present allowing them to connect on deeper levels. In our experience, this is absolutely true. We always feel more connected when we are at the beach and relaxed. The beauty of the sea usually makes us feel grateful to be alive and to share this life together which is always a great feeling to have when trying to connect together.

First date beach ideas

Going to the beach can be a perfect first date idea, offering the opportunity to relax, connect and create some unforgettable memories. From adventurous activities to more laid-back options, there are countless ways to enjoy the sand and the sea with someone special. Here are some ideas for successful first dates at the beach!

1. Go for a romantic beach walk together

One of the best first beach date ideas is to go for a romantic stroll on the sand together. It’s a classic one and for good reasons! Walking hand in hand along the shoreline, enjoying the fresh sea breeze, and listening to the sound of waves crashing against the shore is a perfect way to get to know each other. The relaxed atmosphere and beautiful scenery make it easier to open up and connect with your date. You can talk about your interests, life experiences, and share your stories while enjoying a peaceful walk along the beach. It also allows you to be on neutral grounds which can make breaking the ice easier.

Another perk is that there are beaches everywhere so you can continue to take beach walks together as your relationship evolves. It will always remind you of your first date and why you fell in love with each other. Eric and I have taken many beach walks as dates before and they’re always a great way to connect, relax and be in the moment so we highly recommend it!

2. Dance on the beach, one of the fun beach date ideas

Dancing on the beach, one of our date ideas starting with a D, is a unique and fun way to spend a first date. The feeling of sand beneath your feet, the salty breeze in your hair, and the rhythm of music can create a magical and romantic atmosphere. You can show off your moves or learn new dance steps together. Of course, you can also simply be silly!

Dancing on the beach is an excellent way to connect with your date and break the ice. You can get to know each other while moving and laughing at each other’s dance moves. It’s also a great way to hold hands for the first time and look at each other’s eyes which can help you decide if you’d like to go on a second date!

Many beaches in the USA have people play music already either on the sand or on the boardwalk. You can dance to that music or bring your own. If you bring your own, make sure that local laws allow you to play music on the beach. If they do, make sure that you’re far enough from other beachgoers so you don’t disrupt anyone. Otherwise, you can play music with headphones and share them which will bring you closer together.

3. Explore the tide pools

Exploring tide pools can be an exciting and educational first beach date idea while really helping you figure out if your date is your soulmate. You can marvel at the wonders of nature while learning about the diverse marine life in the tide pools. You can observe various sea creatures such as crabs, starfish, and sea anemones while enjoying the beautiful ocean scenery.

Exploring tide pools is a great way to connect with your date over shared interests and learn something new together. It will allow you to see if your date has any interest in the outdoors and nature and whether they are careful and gentle with our sea friends. It’s a unique and fun way to get to know each other while enjoying the beauty of nature.

Tide pools can also be hot ponds in certain locations. For example, on the Big Island, there are several warm ponds that get heated by the underground hot lava. It’s pretty impressive and a unique experience to share with a date!

Eric and I have lived in many places such as Ireland and Vancouver and both had beaches with tide pools. We’ve seen interesting sea creatures in those tidal pools and it always started new conversations, which is great, even more so on a first date!

4. Explore under the piers

Piers are a common occurrence on beaches, whether that’d be on the US West Coast or South England. Whether made of woods or rocks, you can often explore under them. Exploring under the piers can be a thrilling and adventurous first date idea. You can discover hidden treasures and secret hideouts under the pier while enjoying the unique atmosphere. It’s great for a first beach date idea as it gives you something to do which is less likely to create awkward silences!

You can hold hands and explore the different nooks and crannies together, creating a romantic and exciting experience. Exploring under the piers can be an excellent way to bond with your date and learn more about each other’s sense of adventure and exploration.

5. Take photos under the pier

If you’re dating in Santa Barbara or Santa Monica, you may be familiar with the photoshoots that happen under the piers! Taking photos under the pier can be a fun and creative way to spend a first date and getting to know each other. You can capture the unique and picturesque scenery under the pier, creating lasting memories. You can ask your date to hide behind some of the polls and go find them. You’ll surprise them and the photos will be fun to look at! Experimenting with different poses and camera angles can lead to playful and fun moments. Taking photos under the pier is a great way to bond over shared interests in photography and creativity but also if you just want to spend a fun time together!

6. Ice cream on the pier, the perfect date idea for a relaxed first date at the beach

Ice cream on the pier is one of the classic and simple beach date out of our list of 52 date ideas and for good reasons! First, who doesn’t like ice cream! Second, who doesn’t like ice cream with a view? This sweet first date idea allows you to enjoy delicious ice cream while admiring the beautiful beach scenery and listening to the sounds of waves crashing against the shore. The relaxed and laid-back atmosphere of the pier makes it easier to open up and get to know each other. Sharing a cone or a sundae can create a playful and intimate moment between you and your date as well. This is a great beach date idea for a first date, as you’ll learn that with time, your partner won’t want to share their ice cream anymore (true story haha!).

7. Pier activities

There are plenty of other fun activities you can do on the pier, such as playing arcade games, going on amusement park rides, or watching street performers. Of course, this will depend on where you are located. For example, the Santa Monica pier in California is home to a range of activities and the famous amusement park! Other piers like the Santa Barbara Pier are more casual but perfect for a stroll or fishing. These activities can be a great way to bond over shared interests and create lasting memories. Pier activities are a great way to spice up your first date, break the ice and start the conversation.

It’s a great way to bond over shared interests in sports and fitness while enjoying the beautiful beach scenery.

10. Play Beach Paddle Ball (Frescobol)

Another beach date ideas for a first date is simply playing beach paddle ball together, a date starting with the letter B. Also known as Frescoball, this is a game where you each has one raquette and use it to pass a small plastic ball to each other. It’s a fun game to play especially when the beach isn’t too hot. It’s a good way to work together to see how long you can pass the ball to each other without it touching the sand.

As it will get you moving, it’s also a great game to play as an excuse to grab drinks together afterwards, in case you’d like the date to continue!

11. Watch dolphins play in the waves

If you’re lucky enough to live in an area with dolphins, then why not share those beautiful animals with your date. Many beaches already have barbecues installed. That is the case for Spanish Banks, one of the beaches on the Vancouver shoreline. There, we only need to bring our own cooking material but the barbecue is provided right by the beach which we particularly enjoy when we’re back in British Columbia! You can cook together and surprise each other with your barbecue skills as well!

13. Look for sea shells

Sea shells or Seychelles? Well, if you can’t go to the latter, opt for the former! Searching for sea shells is a great way to bond with your date while exploring the beach. It’s a simple yet romantic activity that allows you to enjoy the beauty of the beach while getting to know each other.

Fishing is a relaxing first date idea at the beach for couples who enjoy silence and living a slow life. You can bond over both the thrill of catching fish and enjoy the peacefulness of the ocean. You will learn from each other about the best fishing techniques or simply enjoy each other’s company while waiting for a bite. If you’ve never gone fishing before, then you’ll learn a new skill. Beach date outfit ideas

Part of having romantic date ideas at the beach is picking the right outfit. Of course you want to look cute, but with the sand, wind and water, some outfits are not suitable for a beach date. We’ve had many beach dates on different types of beaches including pebble beaches, sand beaches, in the summer and also in the winter. From that experience, we’ve gathered experience on what the best outfits are for a beach date.

Beach date outfit ideas for Spring

For men, a light sweater paired with shorts and boat shoes is perfect for a spring beach date. If you live in a cooler area, then trade the shorts for pants like chinos.

Women can wear a flowy sundress with sandals and a denim jacket. It’s best to bring a light jacket or sweater in case it gets chilly. Alternatively, if the weather is still unstable, flow pants with sneakers and a nice light sweater can work too.

Outfits for beach date ideas in the Summer

Men can wear a linen button-down shirt with shorts and sandals for a summer beach date.

Women can wear a bathing suit with a sarong or a light sundress and sandals. Cover ups are also a great option. Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses for sun protection.

What to wear for a beach date during Fall

For men, a sweater with jeans and boots is a great choice for a fall beach date.

Women can wear a cozy sweater with jeans or leggings and boots. Bring a light jacket or coat in case of cooler weather.

What to wear for a beach date during Winter

For a winter beach date, men can wear a sweater with jeans and a parka or coat. Women can wear a sweater dress with tights and boots or a cozy sweater with jeans and a jacket. It’s important to bring warm accessories such as a hat, scarf, and gloves to stay comfortable.

Choosing a beach date night outfit

The beach weather at night can vary greatly depending on your location. For example, California nights can actually be quite chilly even in the summer, so you’ll always need to bring a sweater with you. During winter, you’ll want to bring a coat, gloves, a scarf and a hat as well.

The locations like the Greek Islands are great for couples too and the weather at night is much warmer, even at the beach. If you’re visiting the Greek Islands in the summer, beaches are lovely at night and temperatures are still in the high 20s Celsius. So we recommend bringing a change of clothes to change from your wet bathing suit. A dress or shorts and T-shirts are great options. If it’s a windy day, then Mediterranean beaches tend to get cooler at night, so bring a light sweater as well.

Beach date ideas essentials

Sunscreen

We’ll never say it enough but sunscreen is an essential item for any date at the beach, not only from a practical perspective, but also a romantic one. And that’s true all year-round, not just in the summer! Sunscreen helps to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and bringing it also shows that you care about your health and well-being, as well as your date’s. Applying sunscreen together can be a fun and intimate experience, as you help each other to cover hard-to-reach areas and enjoy the refreshing scent of coconut or other tropical scents. It also helps to prevent the discomfort of sunburn, which can put a damper on any romantic outing.

Towel

A towel is another essential item for a date at the beach, both for practical and romantic reasons. Not only does it provide a comfortable place to sit or lie down, but it also helps to dry off after a swim or simply soak up the sun. Sharing a towel can be a romantic experience, as you wrap yourselves in its soft embrace, dry each other off, or simply snuggle up together while watching the beautiful sunset. It also helps to keep sand at bay, preventing it from getting everywhere and making you or your date uncomfortable. Make sure you bring one for you and one for your date just in case!

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are an important accessory for a beach date. The sun can be quite bright at the beach, all year-round. If you’re anything like me and have sensitive eyes, you’ll want to bring sunglasses so you don’t end up crying from the brightness and ruin your mascara! Sunglasses are also a fun accessory that can become a way to engage with your date as you can try theirs on and vice versa.

Change of shoes

A change of shoes is a practical and thoughtful item to bring on a beach date. Sand can be uncomfortable and irritating, and wearing wet or sandy shoes can be a hassle. Bringing a pair of flip flops or sandals to change into after a swim or walk on the beach shows that you’re prepared and considerate of your date’s comfort.

Change of clothes

A change of clothes is another practical item to bring on a beach date. Whether you’re planning on staying for a while or simply want to change into something more comfortable, having a change of clothes is always a good idea. It’s also a good way to be ready in case the date continues beyond the beach! We recommend bringing a change of clothes that works for many other areas such as the restaurant, a cafe or a stroll in town. A dress or jeans and a nice shirt are good options. It can also be a romantic gesture, as you can offer to help each other change or admire each other’s new outfits.

Beach date ideas principles

Leave no trace

Beach date ideas are great but what’s greater is making sure you leave the beach better than you found it. That’s why, when planning a romantic date on the beach, it is essential to follow the “Leave no trace” principle. This principle encourages people to leave the environment in the same condition they found it, without leaving any trash, food waste or other materials behind. This is not only practical but also romantic, as it demonstrates respect for the natural environment and sets a good example for others. Bring a bag to collect any trash, food waste or other materials and dispose of it in the appropriate place. This will also show your date that you care about the planet and others. Selflessness is a good quality to have in a relationship so demonstrating it should help you win some points!

Read local laws

Before planning a romantic date on the beach, it’s important to research and read local laws to ensure that you are not violating any regulations. Each beach may have specific rules and restrictions on activities such as open fires, alcohol consumption, and other specific activities. Knowing these laws can help prevent any unwanted surprises and ensure that the date is a fun and stress-free experience.

Respect consent

Respecting consent is essential in any romantic relationship and is especially important when planning a date on the beach. Being mindful of your partner’s comfort level is key to creating a positive and enjoyable experience for both of you. For example, some people may not feel comfortable being touched to apply sunscreen, trading their sunglasses or touching hands. Levels of comfort can vary depending on people’s upbringing, background, personal experience and culture. Discussing boundaries and expectations before the date can help ensure that you are both on the same page and can enjoy your time together without any misunderstandings.

It’s also important to respect other beachgoers by not intruding on their space or activities. Respecting boundaries and consent can lead to a more enjoyable and memorable date on the beach.

Beach date ideas tips for a successful experience

When planning a beach date, it’s important to consider a few key tips to ensure a great time for you and your partner.

Dress appropriately for the season

Dressing appropriately for the season is crucial to have a successful date. Whether it’s summer or winter, you’ll want to make sure you’re both comfortable and able to enjoy the beach without being too hot or too cold. Wearing sunscreen and a hat during hot days is also recommended to avoid sunburns and skin damage.

Know allergies

It’s also important to be aware of any allergies that you or your date may have, particularly seafood, sea water, or seaweed allergies. This will help you plan accordingly, whether it’s avoiding certain foods or bringing along any necessary medication in case of an allergic reaction.

Make a checklist

To ensure that you have everything you need for your date, make a checklist of items to bring along such as towels, beach chairs, and water bottles. This will help you stay organized and make sure you don’t forget any important items.

Plan ahead for a successful beach date
