How to get there

How to get to Milos Klima from another island

Milos Island, historically called Melos, is an island located in the West of Santorini and forming a triangle with Paros Island and one of the best Greek Islands for couples. Milos is shaped into a horseshoe allowing for a bay to be formed in the inside of the horseshoe. Klima Milos Greece is located in Milos Bay on the inside part of the horseshoe and at the bottom of Typiti village.

Milos Island is equipped with both a ferry port and an airport. Although they are both small, there are several flights and ferries per day during the high season so it’s easy to access the island. The port is located in Adamas which is only a 15 minute drive from Klima. The airport is a bit farther down south but all together only a 20 or 25 minute drive from Klima.

Getting to Klima Greece by car

The easiest way to reach Klima and to go around Milos is by car. The road to Klima is easy and it only takes about 15 minutes to get there from Adamas, the main town on Milos. We read that parking in Klima was complicated and limited to the road shoulder. This is not true. There is quite a large carpark right at the entrance of Klima where you can easily park your car. There is even shade on the carpark, which you will appreciate in the summer!

Getting to Klima village Milos by bus

During the high season, there are a few buses that run from and to the main towns and beaches like Sarakiniko beach. Buses depart from the town square in Adamas right across the small grocery shop, near the arcade games. There you will also find an updated timetable. There is no bus that drives all the way down to Klima. However, there is a bus that stops in Trypiti.

From Trypiti, you will need to hike down to Klima, which takes about 30 minutes. Note that this is a steep hike and that you will need to come back up as well! You can also hike down to Klima from the Catacombs which takes about an hour.

Getting to Klima village by taxi

Taking a taxi to Klima is also an option if you don’t want to drive around or take the bus. Most taxis are parked in Adamas and can take you to Klima from there. If you took the bus or hiked to Klima and would like to get a taxi back up, you can call one or ask the restaurant to book one for you. Note that they will probably charge you for the ride from Adamas to Klima though.

Best tours of Klima Milos

If you don’t want to worry about driving or planning anything, we recommend the following beautiful organised tours.

If you don’t have a car but still want to get the best out of Milos and the nearby attractions like the Ancient Theatre, Sarakiniko beach and Papafragas, this tour of Milos and Klima is great!

Tours of Milos and Klima by Sailing boat

Exploring Klima via the sea is definitely a great option and right on theme with the colourful fisherman village! This tour takes you all around the island from Sarakiniko to Kleftiko via passing the coast of Klima and the colourful Syrmata. This is a full day tour with dishes (such as salads) served on board.

You can also take a 9 hours Catamaran tour around Milos with drinks and dishes served on board.  From exploring the cave of Sikia, snorkelling in Kleftiko, passing Klima and observing the colourful sigmate from the sea, this Catamaran tour is the perfect romantic way to discover Milos Island and get a unique view on Klima with your partner.

Best time to visit and how long should you stay

The Greek Islands get busy during the summer and Milos is no exception. Klima is a small village which crowds are attracted to so it can get quite busy during the high season. However, we always see people complain about that but we never find that it’s “unbearably” busy like some would say.

If your partner and you are trying to avoid crowds and especially kids, then we would recommend to avoid July and August and come during the shoulder season, especially in June and September. At that time of the year, the weather is still really hot and sunny but the island is a lot quieter. You will find that most tourists at that period are also couples.

During shoulder season and the off season, it is also easier to rent a Syrmata, one of these colourful fisherman houses that make Klima special.

Note though that you should expect most things to be closed and uneventful during the off season (from November to at least mid-March).

Once in Klima, two hours is probably enough to see everything of relevance in the village. You might stay a bit longer if you stop for a drink, decide to have dinner there or like to stop and take lots of photos.

Klima, a Milos fishing village

boat houses in Klima Milos

The creation of Klima village in Greece goes back to 1100 B.C. and used to be known as a strategic position in the Aegean Sea for seafaring. The village was also a huge player in the export of volcanic glass called Obsidian.

Present-day Klima is no longer involved in those activities and has instead become a must-see tourist destination known for its colourful Syrmata.

In Klima Milos, you will find a village that is split in two by the local restaurant. On both the right side and the left side of the village, you will find several colourful house lining up on the waterfront. Each fisherman house Klima Milos offers was originally painted different colours so the owners could easily recognise their own. The houses are still whitewashed but the doors, balconies and stairs are painted in bright blues, reds, yellows and other colours. The doors are made of wood while the houses are carved into the rocks.

Typically, they are built on two floors. The ground floor serves as a garage for a boat and as the kitchen, while the upstairs is used as the living space and for bedrooms. We recommend walking along the waterfront and paying attention to the houses. You will see how they are built and how people keep the downstairs open as a terrace. You will see people reading or just people watching while listening to the sound of the sea.

The houses are no longer used by fishermen. Some have been turned into small souvenir shops while some are rented to tourists during the season.

What to do in Milos for couples

From wandering around the boat houses to exploring some hidden gems, there is actually quite a few things to do in Milos.

Walk on Klima beach Milos with your partner

Klima Milos beach

As we have explained above, Klima is split in two halves, one on the right and one on the left. You will find Klima Milos’ beach in the centre right in front of the restaurant and to the left of the village. This is one of Milos best beaches. The beach is partly made of thin golden sand and of pebbles. We did not exactly go to the beach there but we did walk on the beach. There were some people reading and laying on the sand.

The beach is small and we wouldn’t say it’s the best beach for snorkelling as the water seems to always be a bit wavy here. However, it is one of Milos beaches that is nice for walking around, and sitting for a few minutes while looking at the landscape.

Watch the romantic Klima Milos Sunset

We visited Klima at the end of the day so we got to experience it during Golden hour. At that time of the day, the light is strong and beautiful and sets on the sea in a very cool way. The sunset Klima Milos offers isn’t the same as Santorini’s sunset but it is still very romantic! We would recommend grabbing a drink at the local restaurant and enjoying the view at that time of the day.

Explore Klima village

Klima Milos

Obviously, the main interest in Klima is walking on the waterfront to see the colourful fisherman houses (‘Syrmata’). If you pay attention, you’ll be able to see how they are built inside and all the colours that were chosen.

While you walk on the waterfront, you might get wet as the waves crash on the piers. Also, be careful as some parts are quite slippery. There are special rugs set out along the waterfront that you can walk on to avoid slipping.

Observe the ducks

We were quite surprise to see a couple of ducks wandering the village. These seem to live here which is funny as it’s not the first animal you’d think of when thinking of Greece!

Pick a souvenir together at one of the colourful house

A couple of the Syrmata were turned into souvenir shops. They offer local and handmade souvenirs on the theme of the sea and Greece. You can hang them in your home as a reminder of this amazing Greece vacation you spent together!

Explore the cliffs of Klima

Milos Klima

When we were visiting Klima, we decided to go beyond what the average tourist looks at. We adventured on the left, passed the fisherman houses and followed the path (while hanging onto ropes lol) to what seemed to be an abandoned restaurant, and then, beautiful cliffs. You cannot see the cliffs from the village but they are worth checking out as the view is beautiful. We saw a couple of catamarans and sailing boat there and people swimming as well. This was a beautiful spot during golden hour!

Take photos

Of course, this unique village is perfect for you if you are a photo enthusiast! From the colourful houses to the beach, the view and the boats, there is definitely quite a bit to photograph!

Finding a Klima Milos Accommodation

If you are looking to stay in the village, there are a few accommodations available.

Panorama Hotel Klima Milos

This is the only hotel Klima Milos offers. It is located just on top of the hill and also has a restaurant (see below). We didn’t stay here but it looks like a greta place to stay at near Klima. The rooms look modern and well equipped and, of course, the view on Klima and the sea is to die for. If you are looking for a peaceful and romantic stay in Klima, this might be just what you need.

Syrmata: renting a Klima house Milos offers

Staying at a Syrmata in Klima is definitely an experience! There are quite a few that are available for rent which we have linked below:

To give you a range of price, one night at a Syrmata is usually between €200 and €500. Some rent a carpark space from the nearby restaurant so you can park close to the boat house.

If you want to look at more of them, you can type “klima milos rooms” or “klima milos booking” or just search on reliable Booking

Insider Tip: You might be looking for “airbnb Milos Klima”. Please note that Airbnb does not have a reward program like Booking does. We often book with Booking for that reason as it allows us to have access to better accommodations while paying at least partly with points.

Klima Milos restaurant

There are really just two Klima Milos restaurants: Astakas restaurant and Hotel Panorama Klima Milos.

Astakas restaurant Klima Milos

restaurant Klima Milos

Astakas is the only restaurant Klima Milos offers in the village. At Astakas, you can order meat, fish, shellfish and pasta. Grilled sardines are around €11 while the steamed fish starts at €70 per kg. Lobster spaghetti cost around €90 per kg and a local lamb leg costs €14. This Klima restaurant Milos offers is quite romantic with views straight on the beach and Bay. We had a drink here and service was good and fast. As this is the only restaurant in the village, we would recommend booking a table in advance if you want to have dinner there.

Hotel Panorama Klima Milos

There is another restaurant near Klima just on top of the hill at the Hotel Panorama. Comments from previous guests are good especially in relation to the fresh fish! Guests have added that the view is beautiful as well.

We have also wrote a post about the best restaurants in Milos here.

Things to do near Klima fishing village

Klima fishing village is very well located on the island of Milos and is close to a lot of interesting attractions!

Sarakiniko moonscape

Sarakiniko Milos canyons
Sarakiniko moonscape and cenote

Located about 25 minutes by car from Klima, Sarakiniko beach, also known as the moonscape, is a huge and unique white rock formation that will have you think you are on another planet. There is lots to do in Sarakiniko, from exploring the canyons to going to the beach and discovering Sarakiniko desert.

Plaka Town

Plaka town

Plaka is a hilltop town known as Milos capital. The Plaka Klima route is about 10 minutes by car which makes it a great visit before or after Klima. The town is made of whitewashed houses surrounded by plants and grenade trees. There are a few cafés, restaurants and museum in the town. The main attractions are Panagia Korphiatissa church and Plaka castle which are taken over by people when sunset time comes around! Plaka castle also offers a 360° view on the entire island which we recommend checking out!

Ancient Theatre

Ancient Theatre

The Ancient Theatre is located just 10 minutes from Klima near the Catacombs. The Theatre dates back to the 1st Century but was abandoned and only rediscovered in the 1700s.

Entrance is free and you are able to walk around the theatre, look at the marble benches, the pillars and even go into the pit of the theatre. The view is quite amazing as well and you can see Klima and Trypiti from there.

It is best to park at the catacombs and walk to the Ancient Theater.

Site where Aphrodite (Venus de Milo) statue was discovered

Right near the pathway that leads to the Ancient Theatre, you will see the site where the Aphrodite statue was discovered. It is now displayed at the Louvres in Paris.

Milos Catacombs

Milos catacombs near Klima

Visiting Milos catacombs is a must do while in Klima. This is one of the oldest catacombs in the world and might even be older than the ones in Rome. The catacombs were built around the 6th Century but were destroyed before they were found by archeologists.

At the catacombs, you can tour the chambers, see graves and inscriptions. There are 200 meters of galleries which loop back in a circle. The little holes in the walls were meant for oil lamps. There are about 2000 people buried in the catacombs in total with the big graves being for important families. The tombs were covered with big rocks to prevent smells and diseases to spread.

The catacombs are only a few meters from the Ancient Theatre so you can walk from one to the other. Parking is at the catacombs though.

The visit only costs €4 so it’s perfect if you are looking for cheap travel activities. The tour of the catacombs is guided and lasts about 10 minutes.

Mandrakia Milos

Mandrakia Milos is a small and charming fishing village across the land located about 13 minutes by car from Klima. Mandrakia is also known for its colourful houses, the seafood, and the beautiful turquoise water.

  1. I’m tryin to decide if I should stay in Plaka and visit Klima or Stay in Klima and visit Plaka. Any thoughts?

    1. Hi Ken! It really depends what you’re looking for and how you’re going to get around the island. If you’re looking for a unique stay by the water (like a fisherman house in Klima) for a chill trip and you have a car, then Klima is your pick. If you’re looking to get around by bus, want to stay in a bigger town with more shops and restaurants (so more lively all together), then Plaka will be your pick. You can’t go wrong though as both are superb. Milos is also quite small so your choice won’t really affect distances or travel times. Staying in one of Klima’s fisherman houses is quite cool though so might be worth it for a couple of nights!
