The average Lake Tahoe temperature in April is in the mid-50s with peaks to 55°F during the day. The temperatures tend to be lower though during early April due to the snow falls in March. Temperatures also go down at the end of the day when the sun goes away.

If you’re planning to visit Lake Tahoe in early April, you can expect the weather to still be quite chilly. Though many people think of California as warm all year-round, the state does get a cold winter and temperatures don’t usually go up until May or June, including in Lake Tahoe. The average high temperature is around 51 °F, and the lows can dip down to 27 °F, which means you may encounter some snow and the roads may be covered in frost. However, if you like the snow, you’ll be happy to know that you may see some still falling at that time of the year! We recommend packing plenty of warm clothing, such as hats, gloves, and heavy jackets to stay warm during your outdoor activities.

One of the benefits of visiting Lake Tahoe in early April is that the skiing conditions at ski resorts will still be decent and you won’t be bothered by the crowds as it is still low season. Lake Tahoe skiing in April is a popular activity but is also conditional to the weather, which can be a bit unstable and unpredictable! While it’s not usually hard to find a snow-covered mountain in the area, whether there is enough snow to ski is a different question. If you’re planning a trip to Lake Tahoe in April, you may be wondering if there will be any snow left for you to enjoy. The answer is yes, there is still snow in Lake Tahoe in April. However, the amount of snow can vary from year to year.

Despite the warming temperatures, the higher elevations will still have snow during this time of the year. While it’s not guaranteed, you might even witness fresh snow during your visit. It’s not uncommon for large winter storms to bring significant amounts of snow during this month as well. While Lake Tahoe get an average of 75 inches of snow in December, it only gets about 30 inches of snow in April, which is significantly less. Most ski resorts in Lake Tahoe close around mid-April but some stay open until May to give ski enthusiasts as much time to practice that fun sport. Of course, it’s always snow dependant!

Some pros of going spring skiing is that it is still shoulder season so prices are lower and lines are shorter. Another pro is that you can strip some layers and be a bit more comfortable on the slopes.

Ski resorts at Lake Tahoe in April

There are many ski resorts around Lake Tahoe. In this section, we share the ones that are still open in April:

• Heavenly Ski Resort: Heavenly Ski Resort remains open usually until mid-April unless all snow is gone. This resort is located on the West coast of the lake and is one of the more popular one due to their gondola that provides amazing views on Lake Tahoe.
• Northstar California Resort: This resort is usually open until mid-April. The resort is both a cool ski village and a great place to ski with a range of terrain for all levels.
• Diamond Peak Ski Resort: Open until late April, when the weather is milder, this resort is located near Alpine Village. It’s a smaller resort which doesn’t feel as commercial or overwhelming. It is more suitable if you’re looking for a romantic getaway with a more intimate feeling.
• Palisades Tahoe, aka the Spring Skiing Capital of Tahoe: Open until May, this is one of the two resorts that stay open the longest. The resort used to be called Squaw Valley and has been the home of the Olympics in the past. 
• Kirkwood Ski Resort: Also open until May, Kirkwood Resort is better suited for experienced skiers.

South Lake Tahoe weather in April

Because the weather in South Lake Tahoe in April is mild, it offers you with plenty of choice as to what to do there. If you’re planning a visit to South Lake Tahoe in April, you’re in for a treat with plenty of outdoor adventures and indoor entertainment. The most developed part of the lake, South Lake Tahoe offers countless great restaurants with beautiful views of the lake, local breweries, and taphouses to choose from for a fun night out or a break during the day. The biggest attraction in April is skiing at Heavenly Ski Resort, which offers a gondola that starts right from your accommodation to the top of the mountain to make skiing and snowboarding even more fun and easy!

If skiing isn’t your thing (Marie can relate!), you can go hiking instead. There are many trails in the South Lake Tahoe area including the Rubicon Trail. This is one of the trails that are usually clear in April so you shouldn’t have to deal with the snow there. Other popular hikes include the Eagle Lake Trail, Secret Cove Beach to Whale Cove Beach trail or the Cascade Falls Trail. You can also take a tour to Emerald State Bay Park in South Lake Tahoe, where you can visit Fannette Island, the only island on the lake, and see the impressive 38-room Vikingsholm Castle. The castle was built in the 1920s as a summer residence. South Lake Tahoe is home to the casino strip, many restaurants, and great breweries that provide plenty of indoor entertainment if the weather is too cold or wet. 

Additionally, the mild weather in April allows you to enjoy South Lake Tahoe to the fullest, take a walk on one of the beaches, visit nearby hot springs or go kayaking.

North Lake Tahoe in April

North Lake Tahoe is the perfect destination for adventure seekers who love the outdoors, especially in early spring. In April, you can take advantage of the mild weather and explore the area to the fullest. With rustic mountain charm, the area offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation like rock climbing, mountain biking, and even kayaking if the conditions are good. April is also a great chance to experience some spring skiing and enjoy some relaxing time at the ski resort villages. You won’t have to worry about crowds as this is a quieter shoulder season. North Lake Tahoe is also a bit quieter than South Lake Tahoe so if you really want to avoid people (we all need a break sometimes!), then North Lake Tahoe is great.

If you want to take a break from the outdoor activities, you can visit Incline Village or take a walk on Kings Beach. There are also plenty of restaurants and local brewpubs where you can enjoy a good meal or a couple of drinks together. North Lake Tahoe is a beautiful natural place to explore in April with its small mountain town vibe and without the touristy summer crowds.

Things to do in Lake Tahoe in April

Exploring the beaches

One of the best activities to do in Lake Tahoe in April for those who are not big ski fans is exploring the beaches. Eric and I love spending time at the beach when we go back to North America. There’s nothing like that West Coast vibe you can find on the shoreline! Well, it’s no different in Lake Tahoe. You can’t really go wrong as far as the beaches on the lake. They all pretty much offer stunning blue or green waters, sandy beaches and stunning views on the lake. Most of the beaches are surrounded by pine trees in the background, hence the West Coast vibe.

Here’s some of our favourite beaches in Lake Tahoe in April:

• Sand Harbour Beach: Located in North Lake Tahoe, you can either just walk on the beach or enjoy the many watersports it offers. Make sure to check the weather beforehand. In April, there’s always a chance the lake may be frozen so watersports are a no then. Late April is more suited to enjoy the watersports. There are restrooms on site and parking is around $10. 
• Kings Beach: Also located in North Lake Tahoe, Kings Beach is a popular beach around the lake. In April, you can walk on the beach all the way to the end of the pier. It’s a beautiful beach to watch the sunset from. If the weather is nice enough, you can rent kayaks from the beach as well.
• Pope Beach: Located in South Lake Tahoe, Pope Beach is a sandy beach with sand dunes and pine trees in the backdrop. It offers stunning views on the mountains and the lake itself.

Of course, in April, the water is too cold to go in and might actually be frozen. The sand can also be covered in snow depending on whether you go in early April or late April. But if you like walking, looking at beautiful sunsets and taking photos, the beaches are definitely a place to go to in April!

Snowshoeing in Chickadee Ridge

Snowshoeing is a popular activity around Lake Tahoe and April is a great month to do it. Snowshoeing is super fun and Eric and I love to do it when we get the chance. You’ll need winter boots and snowshoes. You can rent equipment in Incline Village (North Lake Tahoe) but also all around the lake. There is a snowshoe rental in Emerald Bay here.

If you rent your equipment in Incline Village, you can then embark on the Chickadee Ridge Trail.The trail is located on the southwest ridgeline of the Tahoe Meadows, which is accessible by taking Highway 431 and up to Reno. The trail offers stunning views of Lake Tahoe but also the opportunity to feed the bird with special bird feed. 

Hiking in Lake Tahoe in April

Hiking around Lake Tahoe in April is pretty much hit or miss. Because April is the transition month from winter to spring in Lake Tahoe, you can either find yourself in a winter wonderland or with dry and clear weather. We recommend checking the weather a few days before you arrive to Lake Tahoe to see if your hiking plans are realistic. 

Note that hiking around Lake Tahoe can mean different things for different people. Though the short and easy trails around the lake are fine regardless of the weather, other trails might become very strenuous if there is snow. Note also that some trails and roads might be closed due to the weather. All Trails is a good resource to check the condition of the trails almost in real time as people add comments regularly.

Here are some easy trails to go on around Lake Tahoe in April:

• Stateline Fire Lookout Trail: This trail takes about one hour to complete and takes you to a lookout with beautiful views on the lake. Because the trail is paved, it’s actually a great option if it has snowed as you will still have a clear path to follow.
• Eagle Rock Trail: In April, this trail is likely to be covered in snow which makes it more challenging. However, it is possible to do it so that’s why we included it. At the top, it’s the gorgeous view on Lake Tahoe that will take your breath away! The trail takes about two hours if there is snow.
• Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Trail: This trail is perfect for April. The trail is on a boardwalk which is easier to walk on in case there is snow. In April, you’ll be able to see wildflowers blooming in the meadows. It’s more of a relaxing walk and takes about 45 minutes to complete.
• Eagle Falls Trail: This trail is located in South Lake Tahoe and leads to the Eagle Falls. IT’s particularly beautiful in April as the snow is melting which feeds the waterfall. The hike isn’t recommended during winter because of the risk of snowfall but it’s fine in April. You may still find snow on the trail so just be careful of slippery patches. It will take about an hour to complete the hike during spring.

Spring skiing

We’ve touched on spring skiing in Tahoe above and that’s because it’s one of the reasons a lot of people visit Lake Tahoe in April. Because of the milder weather, it’s more comfortable to ski and you can take a few layers off. In addition, as it is still the off-season, the ski resorts aren’t as crowded which is particularly suited for couples in search of an intimate getaway. 

Note also that as the snow starts melting, some of the lifts offer deals for late season skiers. If you’re on a budget, it’s a great time to go!

Exploring Waterfalls

From Eagle Falls to Cascade Falls, Lake Tahoe is surrounded by stunning waterfalls! And guess, what month is best to see those waterfalls? April! That’s because in April, the snow has started to melt from the peaks around the lake. The snow turns into water and has to com down through the waterfalls. The waterfalls are therefore really going and offering a stunning spectacle.

Here’s some of the most popular waterfalls in Lake Tahoe:

• Eagle Falls: This one is one of our favourites as the trail is easily accessible in April.
• Horsetail Falls
• Cascade Falls
• Glen Alpine Falls

Kayaking in Lake Tahoe in April

As we mentioned above, Lake Tahoe actually rarely freezes everywhere. Though certain parts of it might still be frozen in early April, you can still embark on a kayaking adventure on other parts of it or in late April. 

The waters of Lake Tahoe in April are quiet with little wind and a lot less crowds than during the summer. The waters are blue and green and crystal clear along the shoreline. April is the perfect time to go kayaking and taking in views of the lake from a different perspective.

You can rent kayaks on many beaches including on Sand Harbour Beach and Pope Beach.

Paddleboarding in Lake Tahoe during spring

As long as you stay out of the water, paddle boarding in Lake Tahoe in April is a lot of fun! The waters aren’t frozen anymore so you can take time to enjoy the lake from above. However, with paddling, there is always a risk to fall. Because the water is really cold in April, it is recommended to wear a wet suit before embarking on your paddle.

• Easter Egg Hunt

During April, there are many Easter egg hunts organised around Lake Tahoe. You can find one in Heavenly Village, one in Lake Tahoe Community college and some organised by local churches as well.

• WinterWonderGrass Palisades Tahoe

Did you know about the annual music festival that takes place at Palisades Lake Tahoe? It’s a pretty cool one, exactly in the Lake Tahoe vibe, because the stage is set against a snowy backdrop. You get to enjoy performances by legendary Bluegrass and Americana bands from all over the country. The festival runs for three days and has 25 bands performing across four different stages. Note that the festival takes place in late March and early April. If you’re over 21, you can also enjoy free tastings of craft beer and whiskey. Locals love this festival and say it’s one of the biggest events of the year, so you don’t want to miss it.

• Film festivals

In 2023, Lake Tahoe welcomes the Wild & Scenic Film Festival at Lake Tahoe Community College Duke Theatre. The festival aims at inspiring people to take further action on causes related to the environment and the world. 

In 2023, it also welcomes the Banff Mountain Film Festival at Bally’s Lake Tahoe. The festival shines the light on adventurous and outdoorsy stories. 

• Tahoe Truckee Earthday Festival

Want to learn about sustainable products and services? Then the Tahoe Truckee Earthday Festival is for you! It takes place in mid-April at The Village at Palisades Tahoe. • Subaru Winter Fest at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort

This music festival offers live performances over two days at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort. Bands who are performing include Broken Compass Bluegrass and Caltucky.

Are you a fan of skiing and golfing? How about trying something new by combining the two for a thrilling day of snow golf at Palisades Lake Tahoe? This exciting event features nine holes played from the top of the mountain down to the bottom. The festivities happen at the bottom where you’ll enjoy live music, prizes, and a costume contest, ensuring that the fun is not just limited to the players. It’s an event that promises a good time for all!

The weather in Lake Tahoe in April 2017 wasn’t the best! April 2017 saw 10 days of rain, 11 days of cloudy weather and 9 days of sun. The average day temperature was 48°F and the average night temperature was 32°F.

The Lake Tahoe weather in April 2021was pretty mild. The average day temperature was 56°F and the average night temperature was 31°F. April 2021 had 17 days of sun, 12 days of cloudy weather and 1 day of rain.

Cons of visiting Lake Tahoe in April

As much as Lake Tahoe in April has its perks, there are also some drawbacks to keep in mind before planning your trip. Eric and I mainly travel after snow season (unless we visit home Canada) as we tend to prefer warner weather and avoid difficult conditions. Here are some of the cons of visiting Lake Tahoe in April.

Less snow

Although the snow is still present in April, it is not as abundant as in the winter months, so you may not be able to enjoy some winter activities like snowmobiling or snow tubing. Depending on how much snow has fallen, it might not be enough for skiing either. But, because there is still snow in the mountains, it can affect your hiking plans and road conditions negatively too. So there’s no win for you there.

Too cold to go to the beach

The weather is still quite chilly in April, so swimming in the lake is not advisable. Even just hanging out at the beach can be uncomfortable due to the cold temperatures and the wind. Temperature averages around 50°F, so even a wetsuit might not be enough (unless you’re Irish, then maybe you’ll be fine!).

Campgrounds are still closed

Most of the campgrounds around the lake are still closed in April, so if you’re planning to camp, you may have limited options. Only a couple are open year-round such as Tahoe Valley RV Resort and Chris Haven Mobile Home & RV Community.

Trails and roads may be closed due to snow and icy conditions

Due to the melting snow and rainy weather, some hiking trails and roads may still be closed in April, which could limit your outdoor activities.

April is known to be a rainy month in Lake Tahoe, so you should be prepared for wet weather and bring appropriate clothing and gear.

Still have to bring warm clothes so it’s hard to pack light

Even though the weather is warmer than in the winter months, it can still get quite cold, especially at night. This means you’ll have to pack warm clothes, which can make packing light a bit challenging and you might have to pay for a hold luggage as well.

Need a budget for ski and snowshoe rentals

This will not only save you the hassle of putting on chains but will also help prevent spinouts on ice when there are no chain requirements.

Marie has visited California in April and it was cold! We had to wear layers and a winter coat and a winter hat to be comfortable. The wind during my visit in April was quite strong and made us feel even colder!  So here’s the weather to expect when visiting California in April.

In the south of Nevada in the area of Las Vegas, you can expect higher temperatures even in April while in areas like Lake Tahoe, the weather can still be cold and unstable.
