Is Dublin in the UK? Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Where Dublin is After Brexit

Save to Find It Later!

Is Dublin in the UK? This is a question Eric and I often hear all over the world! Between, the United Kingdom, the differences between the Republic of Ireland vs Northern Ireland, Brexit, Great Britain and the European Union, there is no doubt that confusion exists and that people have been wondering where is Dublin Ireland

After living four years in Ireland and now living abroad together again, in the UK, we figured we had to answer this question for you all. While we lived in Dublin, we learned about the national history of Ireland through our multiple museum visits but also by talking to locals. We also experienced remnants of how devastating certain parts of history still are to people and their families.

Similarly to our post regarding London’s location in Europe and France being a country, we will answer the following questions:

  • Is Dublin in the United Kingdom?
  • Is Ireland a part of the UK and why?
  • Is Northern Ireland part of UK and why?
  • What countries are part of the UK
  • What countries are part of Great Britain
  • The relationships between the Republic of Ireland, Dublin, the UK and Great Britain

Note also that for the purpose of this post, we are talking about Ireland Dublin and not one of the Dublin cities in the USA.

Is Dublin in the UK?

No, Dublin is not in the UK. Dublin is located in the Republic of Ireland which is a different country from the United Kingdom both geographically and politically.

Is Dublin classed as UK?

Sometimes, foreign people class Dublin as being part of the UK. Please note that this is incorrect. Though Dublin is geographically located in the same region, it is separate from the UK. From our experience living in Dublin for four years and now living in the UK, it can be quite offensive to say that Dublin or Ireland is part of the UK due to the difficult and recent history between Ireland and the UK.

Why is Dublin not part of the UK?

If you’re wondering how is Dublin part of the UK, stop wondering! Dublin is part of the Republic of Ireland which is separate from the UK. The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland split in the 1920s due to the separation between Catholics and Protestants. While Protestants (mostly in Northern Ireland) wanted to remain attached to the British Crown, Catholics (mostly in Southern Ireland) want to be independent.

No, Dublin is not a country. Dublin is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is an independent country while Dublin is just a city within it.

Note that there are many Dublin cities around the world and especially in the USA due to history and colonization. “Dublin” usually refers to Dublin, the capital city of Ireland. If people are talking about a different Dublin in the USA, you’ll get it from the context (e.g.: they’re from there) or from the fact that they add the state afterwards, e.g.: Dublin, Ohio. The city of Dublin in Ireland is sometimes referred to as Dublin IE.

Is Dublin in the EU after Brexit?

“Is Dublin in the UK or EU” is a question that Eric and I have both heard quite a bit ever since Brexit happened. As a reminder Brexit refers to the UK leaving the European Union. While the UK left the European Union on 31st January 2020 (Brexit Day), the transition period officially ended on 1 January 2021

Since Dublin is not part of the UK, it wasn’t directly affected by Brexit. So Dublin remains in the EU after Brexit.
